Stargazer Lily harm?

Last summer I had 2 beautiful stargazer lilies in smallish clay pots. Today I transplanted them into a half barrel along with other lilies already planted. When I dug the first one up, I thought it was now two bulbs but when I tried to divide it, what appeared to be part of a shell fell off - a hard structure that looked like a very thick, hard segment of onion skin - sort of. [dunno] The bulb itself is bright yellow with new growth showing. Did I damage the bulb by breaking off this structure? Is that it's food source? Stargazers are one of my favourite lilies, so I don't want to lose one of only two.

I'm so excited that spring is nearly here - just the thought of spicy lily fragrance is intoxicating!
