cactus won't root

i took a part off a small cactus i set it in cactus potting mix why won't it root? how can i make it root?

puddingned94, what type of cactus do you have? When you took the cutting did you let is scab over before replanting? You need to let a crust form where you cut it from the mother plant. Also I dip mine in rooting hormaone after it forms the crust then plant it. Do not over water that is one of the worst things you can do.

When did you take the cutting? Cacti don't do anything quickly. Please describe the cutting; is it a pad from a prickly pear, a smaller offset from a clumping type cactus, did you cut the tip off something? ...? How big is the cutting?
