How do I know if my potatoes are ready---short of digging them up?

I just asked my mom this same question, and her answer was "when the plant dies down and begins to get brown". I am assuming mom knows her stuff, but we'll see what everyone else says. Good luck!

Mum's right Tonya, but hey, you can always sneak in sideways and get a few early ones. Some nice new chat potatoes always go well steamed.

I dug some up early in June, but try not to disturb roots or plant. My second crop is ready now. The potatoes have grown to a good size and taste delicious ![[thumb]](im/graemlins/thumb.gif)
