A friend has a huge strelitzia plant in her backyard that she intends to get rid of. I would like to try and divide it into lots of plants for my garden. Has anyone had any experience with dividing this plant? Do I try and dig up the whole thing (wouldn't be able to do it by hand) or do I just chop up sections and not worry too much about the roots. It is really huge and has lots of flowers on it at the moment even though it is winter. Do I cut back the leaves?

it is dividable. they are usually called bird of paradise here in the US. if you google this site (at the top of this page) for bird of paradise or bop, you will find lots of threads on it.
