In order to keep my mums from blooming too early, I regularly pick off the buds so that I have some beautiful color in the fall. My question is: when do I stop picking the buds so that they bloom in Sept. and October? I live in NE Ohio. Thank you.

I use a hedge shears to trim my mums up neatly and to make them branch fuller and make a rounder plant.
So far this year I've given them 3 trimmings. They used to say don't prune after July 4, but I heard Andre Viette say once that they pruned on July 24 and still got blooms. I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk trying that however. I'm a hundred miles south of them but in a cooler zone at a higher elevation so I have a shorter season.

My mums are on their second flowering this year. I trim them after every bloom and always get more.
I'll be trimming them again in about a week or two(when the blooms fade)and fully expect them to continue blooming.

I didn't even know mums would grow that far south.
