I have never seen anything like that but I am betting it would be really great. First thing I would do is a search of your area and see just how many of those birds you actually have in your yard. I would imagine an 8 year old would get frustrated if he could only hear the songs on the machine and they were not visible in the yard.

Actually we have almost everyone of those birds in our back yard. She plays with the Demo one @ the Wild Birds Unlimited store and keeps asking if we can get one..... I think she would enjoy it.

I would love to hear some reviews on it though.

Thanks!

I sell those in my store. There are loads of other cards you can get for it. They go by habitat, ie swamp, forest, birds of the south. There is a 4 card set just on warblers. A frog card (makes everyone laugh!)
It has a volume control and an ear plug so you can listen to the machine and a bird to try to match them up. They're fun for quizzing each other too.
I sell loads of them. [thumb] My demo machine is going on 6 years old, with customers playing with it, and still going strong.
A nearby plant nursery had a lecture on bird gardening and birds, used it in their demo, and a bunch of the people from the lecture came to get one and more cards.
I'd say if an 8 year old wants a machine that interests her in birds and nature instead of a video game...Go For It! [teacher]

Hey! I LOVE video games, Wrennie! I have over 7,000 of them on my computer! [Big Grin] I haven't seen one of those machines but HAVE sampled them online. If there are ENOUGH cards to cover all the birds in one's area I think they would be GREAT.

Nothing wrong with video games, but I'd rather have a kid interested in nature first. Not have video games as an only interest and influence.

We homeschool, so my dd LOVES educational things. She prefers a trip to the book store than a toy store [Smile] .

I went ahead and ordered it. I'll let y'all know what we think once it arrives!

I have at least 500 books...easily. It's like my own personal library sort of. And I read fast!!!! [thumb]

I download e-Books and books-on-tape off of TorrentSpy.com. I have about 1,000 on my computer now. Haven't really read any yet.

We have well over 1000 books. That was a lot to cart across the country TWICE!

I tried reading books on the computer, but it was not nearly as comfortable as curling up in bed with one.
