That is an awesome idea. I do not think I can get those kinds of shells here either, but they sure make a neat looking planter!

I planted the portulaca(moss rose) that I found in my back yard and a tiny piece of the regular kind I have in a planter.

I have a couple of shells like these and would like to plant something that does well indoors(in good light).I have planted english ivy in one of them but it does'nt seem to be doing too well. Any ideas?
by Tonya on July 19, 2006 10:44 AM
What about Pothos...aka Devil's ivy. It is worth a try. Just make sure to get the soil into the shell as far as possible. [thumb]

Another idea for the large seashells..

I poured melted wax into mine and put a wick and made a pretty candle ...
Put some glitter on the wax and it really shines when it it lit............

Nice for christmas.......

One word of caution on shell planters...watering can be tricky!

I found a bunch of shells on Metompkin Island last year, planted them with a bunch of my baby plants. Talk about trial and error!

I've found that having a watering schedule is better than checking the soil, frequent small waterings because you can never tell if the roots are wet since there is no drainage...

Warning given, my plants are doing great now but it was touch and go for a while because we went thru some too-wet-too-dry cycles.

Oh, I've also found that if you spoon the soil in and shake the shell, it gets further in...once the interior of the shell is soiled, add the plant before you finish filling it!

These shells look great on the fireplace, btw. And if you're tricky, they can even fit well on skinny windowsills.

I made wax candle of mine.

Put glitter on top for christmas.
