anyone know a good site where i can look up an herb and find its medicinal qualities as well as its side effects? any other information on cultivation would be nice also, but not necesary.

i have been usin botanical.com or modern herbal. but it was written in the 30's i think, i would rather have something a little more up to date

Wizzard,
To be honest, I don't know of one...

but I have some books, from The Rodale Series,
and they are scrumptious books, nice pictures,
and how to make things, like it had some different pots/containers to make up..
Sleepy time, Relaxing time, Cooking time..
I'll hunt the name of the book down, but it's from Rodale...

Wizzard those sites are both good and even though the info is from way back when...It is very valid information....The books Weezie mentioned is a very good book and one of the first ones I owned was Rodales "Growing & Using Healing Herbs"...But If I was to suggest a book I would suggest the two volume set : A Modern Herbal by Mrs. M. Grieve ISBN 0-486-22798-7 Which is on that one site...I have tons of Herb Books, But this one is the best my in opinion....If you need help with something particular or don't understand something just post it or PM me and I would happy to see if I can help you.

I was going to sneak back in here and suggest
Comfrey may have some good helpful hints for you..

And I come back in and she's been here already..
Thanks Comfrey... [thumb] [kissies]

My other suggestion would be to see if there is a local place in your area that grows them already,
and pick their brains there.. they're growing them, and more than likely can tell you the tricks of making herb stuff...
**Like Tinctures, balms, salve's, poultices, oils, lotions, compresses, infusions, etc....**

I have been extremely interested in herbs, and would love to someday, really get into them,
but I am the type better to be safe than sorry..
So, after my kids grow up and I have some spare time on my hands, I intend to find some classes, etc.. on this subject and learn..really learn..

I know that not know ALL the info or the right info can be dangerous..
Like St. John's Wort, if you take it too long,
you can become photosenstive.. *out in the light hurts you, your eyes and skin I believe.*

Taking too much garlic can thin your blood and you don't want to be on a blood thinning (anticoagulants) and eat too much garlic..

Golden Feverfew mouth ulcers, and don't take with anticoagulants...

Meadowsweet, don't take it if you're allgeric to
aspirin...

Curled leaf parsley, avoid eating tooo much when
you're pregnant...

Arnica, don't put it on an open wound or sore..
or take internally...

So, there's lot's of good with herbs, and tasty too, but know what you're eating or putting on..
*I am too much of a worry wort sometimes, but hey..* [kissies] [thumb]
