Do you make the birdhouse things for the birds?
Or the bowls????

We used to grow the luffa's...
They were alot of fun, the peelin'
wasn't all that fun, but the sponges were!!!

We grew broom corn one year too,
Tried to make some brooms',
but we were lacking a bit of knowhow back then.

OHH I seen one on a gourd site...But I'll have to come back and show you cause I've been ordered to bed*and Gee...just got here too....)
was out of tree limbs they hung down.be back in mornnig....nite!

Well I can't find the page now& thought was maybe searching gourd societys or was on a society page [thinker] the alabama page sows some hanging down. This other page did that too. They had took wood/trees stuff and made a frame and spaced the top enough for the vines to grow and had the gourds hanging down& over to one side was a huge long tepee type trellis with vines running up it and down the other side and on the ground was growing these huge 100 lb plus gourds, kettles& think said bushels.the man got some award for largest grown kettle.and you'll know the page cause can see the luffa leaves.they are blueish gray.he said he watered them well with fertilizer and compost& let the leaves dictate when needed more fertilizer.
Shoot.I may have been looking up seed info on the types was growing.my browser doing weird stuff up top.I don't want no new computer issues [Eek!]

I'll have to look that one up. I have a bunch of old tree limbs. Do you do your on a trellis? This will be my first year to grow gourds and I don't really know a thing aBOUT IT oops caps, not even sure what all kinds I have.
Do I need one big trellis, or a trellis for each one?

I have to go to the bank today so won't be able to look it up til later.

Belinda,
If you scroll about half way down, you'll see
and illustration on what they call a hoop house,
but you can take the same basic structure and
plant on the outside of the cattle panel,
they'll grow up that and hand down in between the panel and the top part will fill up with the greenery....
cattle panel/hoop house structure

Works the same for cucumbers, morning glories, etc.

There's some that make the panels high enough to walk right under too!!!

Weezie

Here's the one I had found originally a while back that gave me the idea...
'Hoop houses' provide winter growing space

I have never gotten to try it, I'm toooooo po!!
But theoretically it should work..

The only thing that would come to mind my first
as it wouldn't work is two things???

#1. Would be the type of your gourd you're growing, some of those puppies can get longggggggggg and heavy...
Which brings me to #2. The type again that you're growing for the weight of the fruit...
Plus the weight of all the plants too...

Maybe some type of reinforcing???
NOT sure 100% sure [dunno] ????

I thought about that too. I have some caveman gourd seeds. I know those will need to be higher. I think I'll try some of those made from the wood too. I have pleanty of sticks. I'l like you I'm pooor too. [Eek!]

I wanna try craving some, my mom got me a book on how to do that this year for christmas. Some are so pretty I can't wait now to get my gourds up, grown, and dried.

I have a full sun location all picked out. So I need to get my trellises started. Which like you say would be easier with MONEY

One thing I did hear in a tv special about
doing the gourds, when it dries and you are scraping off the outter dried skin, wear a
mask or something to cover your face, or
down wind or up wind, **which ever way is away from the dust* when sanding it off,
IT'S TOXIC!!!!
You're not supposed to breath it in...

Weezie

P/S You have alot of gourds...
What fun you must have!!!!

Didn't know it was toxic, but since I have breathing problems anyway I had hubby pick me up a mask, he got it from work, they get a new one every week.

I did read that it was very dusty. Also read that mice love the seeds and have been Known to chew holes in the gourds while they are drying.

Molds, Bacteria and Spores

those are the reasons I picked up the mask. I'll sure be wearing it now. I had planned on doing all my working on them in the yard while I'm out with ashley when she's playing. If I wear a mask she'll wear one too, she'll think it's fun. So I'll have hubby pick her up one too.

They say to plant once danger of frost is past.also it sends a root dow THEN pops a leaf up out of ground.some folks sow in pots and transplant to garden after frost cause have short grow season. The hardshells take on average 95-100-120-125 days.and the bushel& kettle gourds can weigh up to 100 lbs and those are the ones to be grown on ground.snake gourds can be grown either,I believe Robbie explained it as they made gun powder horns if greww hung and snakes if grow on ground cause would curl.
they also have "gourd molds" out.are some nice chinese ones with flower imprints, but they don't give you a choice. The ornamental gourds are less time, are like the ones yousee alot in thanksgiving the crown of thorns, turks turbin, orange ball, egg gourd, spiked ball, some are striped.

I'm growing on my chain link fence& the back of yard is fenced with cattle panals so are some ina section back there too.Robbie said today mne may not sprout for another 3 weeks, his were down a week before mine(yeah....HE had a tiller to use...........not HARD labor!)I tilled rabbit poo and pine needles where was sowing my gourd seeds around fence.will go around next week with compost dressing and waiting on my manure tea to bubble.we seem to get alot of clouds lately.
I will have cattle fenceing around my garden Monday after hubby leaves for work and will sow some more gourds here& think I will make a scarecrow.I have to fence my veggie bed to keep the dogs out of it.they won't stay out and its not even planted yet.they keep helping me dig....but they removed my onions& I know which one did it too.She smells like she ROLLED in them.

You can make slings for your gourds.what I did with my birdhouse one was taped a top hook of hanger to part of vine tip and when vine dried I cut vine and hung by its hanger& Robbie told me when the blossom came off end,i could wrap wire around the top and would grow into gourd.when he shows me on mine will post pics.

I planted a package of mixed gourd seeds, and I tho't they were to be planted like zucchini or squash. I think that's what mine are, mini zucchini squash and the likes. [dunno]

This is my first year with gourds and I had no idea really what I was getting into.

Good to read all the posts.

I was planning on drying mine and using them in harvest baskets for show. Am I on the right track. [thinker]

Here is a picture of my gourds. I planted them about 2 weeks ago in my greenhouse, and they're growing fast.

 -

I planted 3 seeds pre pot and next week I'll have to transplant them, they're getting too big for one pot.

The interesting part is they look just like the real zucchini and squash plants I have sitting right beside them. [clappy]

I'm going to have to be careful, could easily mix them up, what fun..... [Big Grin]

I got small white flowers on some in the sunflower bed area& can say they ain't the birdhouse ones.I would guess swan gourd???The luffas are starting to pick the pace up and are now starting to climb.

I do have some birdhouse gourd seed if anyone wants to grow some. They are hardshell take about 120+ days.
I have a row of 'some-kind-of-gourd' in a gardenbed strip with pumpkins, squash, zuccini, cucumber, watermelon canelope.pumpkins banana peppers.whats strange...Is I hand pollinate& got a watermelon forming that I'm still waiting on a male to hand pollinate a female flower with.....
I'll try to rember a flowershot.I'm going to party a this evening.so may be incognito.

Weezie...ya see He FINALLY did My BEDS!!!!!I got an additional Hex.The timbers I moved to form barrier down fence line....He left in place& even nailed them [kissies] Now I'm waiting for the garden claw.... & my water lotus is up to 12 leafs now.

If those are the one's I sent,
It didn't take me that long to get them, believe
it or not.. I had wondered too..
But I got a crop of 5 gourds..
**I had about 100 more babies starting on them'
(the plants) but nipped them all off, and the vine STINKSSSSSSSS by the way when you cut them,
but if I hadn't snipped them, then those 5 would not have matured...
I even started them late too...
