Is there any special germination technique when trying to get canna seeds to start? I've never started them before.

they always recomend fileing them(which is not very easy)& can be purchased pre-filed.And pre soaking or pouring boiled water over them. But if are fresh canna seeds you can pot them up and keep in full sun& keep moist& they will sprout.I've sowed a bunch of my seeds this year& they've came up fine.I need to thin my canna corral out as they are still sprouting& getting quiet crowded.they will bloom the 1st year& will be different from the parent plant. Not all cannas set seed.some are seed setters some are not.My canna journeys end does not set every bloom I got 3 seeds from the 1st bloom& none from the 2nd& 3rd.so far looks like ahve 2 pods this round& ones very fat.

I keept the pot moist like watering it a few times a day&I did try 3 in ground by porch a few feet away& they've came up.but the soil is not rich there.

yes.1 is purple leafed.I also have a very tall purple leafed canna that sets seeds. It may be one of last years seeds.I was still thrilled.Though i love my purple canna and it grows 7 ft plus.It blooms later in season.

Thanks for the information! [thumb] I have some of the Dwarf Cannas which I like very much, so I might try to grow some from seed. [Wink] This will help a lot.

I take a fingernail clipper and use the corner of it to take a tiny nick out, but you just have to nick the the hard coat and be careful [thumb] not to go too deep. [Frown] It works great for me!

That's it, Tonya, and it will get larger so let it completely dry on the stem before you cut it off. There will be several large black seeds in each pod. The one you have pictured may be the only one for that particular stem but they usually make several pods so let it grow to see what happens. [Wink]

this ones only a lil over 2 ft.I don;t know if it will be about this height or 3-4 ft.I know I need to move the blooming ones as they bloom from the pot.My tall russian reds has one decide to start shooting a bloom stalk up.& journeys ends 2 larg pods only had 3 seeds but they are large seeds.I sowed all 3 seeds& will likely cut it close to blooms on those 3 seeds.
I didn't have any yellow cannas so was quiet happy.just not decided where to place it yet.Thinking of the flag pole.

I planted 30 red cannas this year. They are about 4 feet tall and are going to seed now. I have a medicine bottle full of seeds already and they are still loaded with seed pods that are not quite ripe yet.

I read in one my books that when you start one from seed it takes about 6 months before it will bloom...So if yours only took 90 days then you did great. They can be started indoors about a month before spring, then set out when the night time temps are 50-60 degrees at night.

Mine were sitting in HOT TX sun -
I keept them watered. When I checked their soil temp the other day...it was 124.So I've NOW understood why some of my plants leaves are yellow....soil is HOT.I should have gotton the hint when my feet burn as I run across deck barfoot unless I'm running water as I go [lala] That 1st one took 92 days. The others are still growing& they are still a lil crowded cause I've not moved the blooming one out yet.Right now I'm playing with weeds so can start a compost in garden bed thats finishing up its season(what didn't bake that is.)

You are right I am sure the Texas sun/heat had something to do with the faster progress of your canna seeds...LOL the rest of us just have to wait longer.

Well just make sure you shove your cooler air my WAY.....I'm SE...lol
Longer season too don't forget.I roughly get 3 months off(slowed down) for gardening.Predicting a warmer winter.
