I have a devils back bone that I have had for about 22 years No matter where I lived I always made sure it was in a south to west window. When I moved here I had it in the south window for about a year, recently I moved it to a west window tho south light still reaches it I've noticed the leaves have turned a richer green the last few weeks , Today I saw little buds developing:are these bloom buds? I know it's not the start of another shoot, I never seen these before??, nor was I aware devil backbone bloomed or does it? Anyone know?

I found a site on these plants, because they are so intrestingly named, I had to look them up.
It says there that...
The plant does not bear conspicuous flowers, but it will eventually produce small red flowers that resemble the heads and wings of tiny cardinals, hence its other common name "redbird cactus."
It also states that the plant's leaves and stem are poisonous.

(that's the page I found the info on)
I think I might get one of these, if for nothing else but the name.... [devil] [devil]

Thanks AMBER for the site that's what I have IN THE HOUSE mine is about 3 ft tall and full and I have noticed over the years IT likes to be crowded.According to the site you directed me to I have the the wrong kind of soil OPPS!!I just have it in 1/2cactus soil-1/2 houseplant soil and water it only when dry. If a piece of it breaks off I let it dry out 2 -4days dip in root medium and stick it in the dirt and it takes off>>> Well I MUST be doing something right [grin] because after all these years it's beginning to bear blooms. In the LATE FALL no less!!! I'm taking pic day by day. SO EXCITED!!(doesn't take much to make me happy!! [clappy] ) [angel]

I have a Devil's Backbone that I got as a cutting from my aunt. It is really thriving in my sunroom. I didn't know that it can bloom. I wonder if my aunt knows or if she has seen hers bloom? I will have to ask her this evening...

Njoynit And Dixie!! well yesterday one bud started opening today its open a little more and it looks like a green "Hair" is curling out of it about 1" long. another bud is just starting to "split to spit.. the other 5 are still closed, I'm sending Amber some starters hopefully the cold won't hurt them in delivery. I'm anxious to hear from her later to see if they "took" or not. Njoynit there are times some of the 'stocks' start to look spindely , I just break them off let them dry out dip in medium and stick back in the dirt south to west windows is where I always have "HER" yes I said HER!! After ALL a HE could NEVER give me BABY Blooms [nutz] [Big Grin]
