I got a divsion& a cutting of orchid cacti will be 2 years @ Christmas.I moved it into a hanging basket this spring about Mayish. My question is about growing conditions.I hear some let them go dormant some do not and both will still end up with blooms. So when they're growing they go dormant at temps of 40(roughly) so is it considered dormant if just periods of below 40 or a constant temp below 40 for a period of time.I cold GH it last year but in a darker corner.it grew alot this summer, but moved it to almost full sun for most of the day. you can see picture of it in yahoo albulm:gardening 2005.I have still fertilzed it.

anyone here grow these babys????

Hi Njyonit,

My Epi just finished blooming a few weeks ago - documented here. Last winter I provided as much light as possible (here in the PacNW not an easy feat during winter months! [Frown] ); it continued to grow during the winter. Then in spring it was moved outdoors to a sheltered location where it was in shade most of the day, only receiving a few late afternoon and evening hours of sun. When the nights began to be cooler towards the end of August, it set buds which opened the last and first weeks of September and October, when I brought it back indoors. Another basket which was only started in the spring I brought indoors about a week ago when night time temps started falling below 50 F. Long answer to your question but it is not necessary for Epiphyllums to go through dormancy to flower. More important are the cooler nights of shorter days, and that they are potbound.

Well I can give them a pretty comffy winter then...mild winter.I've had mine in full sun for most of the day& it really loved that and took off like a rocket& when read they like to be potbound.I bought a 10 inch hanging basket& its filling in nicely.

Weird"?"......do them air roots do ok in the cooler temps?.we almost average 60 in the winters.we still warm up quiet a bit& it will be on my porch converted GH(hubby done learning...even asked if knew when I was putting up my plastic.....) mine is suppose to be white blooms with pink edges.I've seen some neat colors.

Hey Njoynit,

60F temps and you call that winter?! [Roll Eyes] [Razz] Are those day or nightime temps? If nightime, I 'm quite sure it is okay to overwinter outdoors. Aside from temperature, another reason I brought mine indoors is winters here are our monsoon season; rarely does humidity drop below 70% and most often is 80-95% all winter so the soil has a better chance to dry out indoors.

The Epi in your album looks great! Won't be long for that baby to be rootbound and producing buds! [grin] If you are interested in trading white with pink edges or any other color for pure whites please PM me. Epis are my FAVORITE flower [Cool] [flower] (their fragrance is almost orgasmic! [Embarrassed] ) and I'd love to start a collection of other color varities.

Will, once you've experienced an Epi in full bloom you'll never settle for less! [Cool]

I've heard that too...word-wise...that ALSO fits Brugmansia [Roll Eyes] [teacher] "orgazmic" .

our temps can be in the 60s alot in the winter durring the day.even a few days in the 70s&80s occasionally.Ya still feel the sun...but it don't make ya run for the AC(and at times I even need the AC in the winter..ha ha [Big Grin] )
My porch has changed since last winter....but is still a portion that I can cover with plastic& had a "rita-count" of 73 plants& know have 12 to unground& pot up.I won't have the great lighting though,so may be snagging a floresent light to fill in.Somedays we have warm spells and would move all the plants out in yard for a "sunday".My computer room will alos be moveing& THAT room WILL have great lighting [flower]
I'd like to trade& do have plans to take some cuts for another pot and a few possible trades.I'll let you know when I get that far .I got brugmansia cutting comeing up soon& have to get my gardenshed back in order cause I can't find a thing in there& here lately its like EVERYTHING I can't find is missing IN there somewheres!

here's that site.I found the leaflet.
Epipyllumworld.com

they don't currently take credit cards, but do paypal.minumum order is $20 and that includes the shipping range from $3-$5 a cut& are color photos& have discriptions& tells if are fragrant ot not.

I am so tempted. I need a good smellum flower in the apartment. That would clear up the cooking odors from not having a range hood. But I have some bills to pay first.

Njoynit, thank you for posting the link to Epi World. Although at this time they do not ship to Canada I enjoyed perusing the many colored varieties available. So many beauties to choose from! [Cool]

Please keep me in mind when you are ready to trade. [flower]
