How to Grow and Care for Dragon Lily Plants
[teacher] Dracunculus vulgaris is known by many names, Dragon Lily, Voodoo Lily, Viagra Lily and the "tell it like it is" name of Stink Lily.

The "Stink" that eminates from the flower on the day it opens smells somewhat like rotting meat and attracts flies as the chief pollinator, an attribute that needs consideration when you decide where to plant this flower. Luckily the odor dissipates after the first day, allowing you to enjoy the exotic beauty of this unusual plant!

The 10-12 inch flowers range in color from deep marroon to nearly black and last for 7-10 days. The ornate green foliage appears in March but the flowers wait until early to make their appearance.

Dragon Lilies are native to the eastern Mediterranean region. They are hardy in USDA zones 5-8, provided they are adequately mulched in the winter.

Dragon Lilies are tough and easy to care for. They can be grown in full sun to partial shade. Provide good drainage and water well during the growing season. When the plant begins to die back after blooming, you should decrease watering.

The plants benefit from a top dressing of compost and bone meal in early Spring.

Dragon Lilies can be propagated from seed or offset bulbs.

Cool pix Bill---good thing the smell disapates after the first day they open up huh?LOL.....I don't think the smell of rotting meat would be too great to have to smell all summer long....

Where'd you buy it from? [dunno]
by weezie13 on November 25, 2005 08:31 PM
I got it from my accidental package left
on my porch on my Birthday for Van Dyck's Bulbs..
Someone had placed an order, and because a small
boo~boo with the wrong order no., it came to my house,
cause I'm on the mailing list and it was
my no. on the address file..
So, I called and told them I didn't order anything, but alllll the bulbs surrrrrrrrrrre looked nice [grin] [thumb] [flower] and how funny it was that that package landed on the porch ON MY BIRTHDAY, AND THAT I'M A HOSTESS ON A GARDENING FORUM [lala]
The guy on the phone said, tell ya what, why don't you just keep those bulbs and we'll issue a new order to the one who really put the order in..
I was like, well, okay, if you insist..
Thanks for the Birthday present [grin] [kissies]

And there were 4 of the 6 packages of plants
that were on my wish list, soooooo, hey, lucky me..
*especially cause I didn't get no other goodies
for my birthday [Eek!] *

I'm still tryin' to figure out my
Arum's, which are in the same family sorta..

*the same way a seed gets made, I guess..*
the stalk puts up a flower, then pollenated,
then small berries up and down the stem...
then the stem lays down and supposedly the seeds
come out of the berries when it's ready????
Not sure, but seems like my clump have gotten bigger, but the growths give it the appearance of bulbs growing more at the base???

So, I am still trying to figure out how they
multiply? By the bulbs or the seeds???

I am hoping Dragon Lily survives,
didn't get a chance to throw any chopped
leaves on them like I usually do, ~~behind~~ but, with this freaky weather we're having... we've gotten one and a half foot of snow, and by Monday now, I just heard it's supposed to rain and be up to 60*'s for that one day...

Of course, smellin' this puppy may be a whole different story too... we'll see if beauty can out way the smell..

They spread via bulb but the berries do have seeds. Just takes 7 yrs for things like this to flower from seed--need a long time to form the bulbs, etc!! Been trying to get one for a while. Maybe someday I will come across enough extra money to buy a couple??!! Would be nice--but then maybe I would only kill them, too??!! hehehe

I got my ~~>by accident<~~ at
Arum dracunculus vulgaris at Dutch Gardens

They only come in one color that I know of...
and it's a perennial, it's growing zones is 7-9...
(I'm a growing zone 5, but I have an area I can over winter dahlia's, so I too am keeping my fingers crossed it likes the spot too..)

Be for warned.. they stink for a small period of time... tha'ts how it attracks things *bugs, flies, etc.* to pollenate it....

I'm ready to plant my bulbs but I'm not sure if planting them right now OR early Spring next year would do any good for the blooming season.
My USDA Zone is 6b; and I don't know why there's a note in the package: "To lift them in Fall". So, I'm kinda hesitant and confused if I have to plant them right now.
Most likely, I just have to mulch it well in the winter, as Bill mentioned in this thread.
I got them at www.Brecksbulbs.ca by the way.
by weezie13 on October 23, 2006 07:15 AM
Mississaugan,
What growing zone are you??

**I think you're near me, in growing zone,
but not sure**

I'm growing zone 5..
and they are USDA zones 5-8,

My zone is 6B; Mississauga, Ontario. Should I plant it now? OR wait for early Spring..? Why would they tell me to lift them in Fall then..? if they're (bulbs)perennial...according to the plant details, it's a zone 7-9 so, I should probably wait.

by weezie13 on October 25, 2006 09:56 AM
Yep, I'd wait...
I think I planted mine too early
in the spring too, cause we had a late frost/cold chill here and it got zapped [Eek!] [tears] [Frown]
I felt soooo bad too, cause it actually was
sprouting and was sending nodes up thru
the dirt and looked nice..

Which ever you decide to do,
Please keep us posted...
I would love to hear about it
whether it worked for you *(or not)*

Thanks for sharing... for sure I'll keep this thread up to date when the time comes.

The weather up here seems to be several degrees lower than usual. I still need to plant some bulbs. By next week, it'll be back to double digit...(crossing finger.)
