We have a larger flower pot that sits on the front deck of our house.
It only has potting soil in it at this time.
and people sometimes put there cigarette in it before they enter the
house.
Last night we smelled something burring like leave or such, so I did
not think too much about it, then today about 20 hours later my
girlfriend asked me if I had done anything to the pot of dirt because
it looked to be lower.
I took a look at it and indeed it was lower so I felt it and it was half
ash.
I could not believe that this topsoil had caught on fire and smoldered
all night. and was still red hot and burning 20 hours later.

A lesson learned that cigarettes have a place and a flower pot is not
it.
I would not have ever believed that topsoil burns.

Isn't that maddening when people do that , we have had a similar problem with our 3ft high elm hedge that runs in front of our house and we have people who walk by and "flick" their cigarette into the hedge and if i am not on top of the leaves that sometimes gather in the hedge we have had a little "smoldering" going on and heaven forbid you point it out to them, they look at you like its now your problem since they flicked it its not theirs now. WE have had that happen a few times and its soooo rude [devil] [Mad] I totally understand and its scary to think of it happening at night [scaredy]

It was definitely potting soil bought from Home depot.
it was in a pot that came about knee high and when
we noticed it, had smoldered about half way down.
the top nothing but ash.
the pot I believe to be made of fiberglass so lucky
we found it before it got to the bottom.
its also very windy out there allot of the time so I
guess that helped it to keep burning as long as it did.

I am a smoker, but a pretty cranky one when it comes to "cigarette flippers". I have decorated large coffee cans with "Put your butt here" on them and still people come over and flip the butts. DH was a retired Firefighter and he taught me well!

i would leave out cans if i thought that they would actually use them, we live so close to a high school and a public school that i am sure they would disappear or be used as a toy by the "kiddies" i always try to keep the soil around the hedge moist, so i dont have any sudden flames, but the cans are a great idea though.....

Butts are a nasty habit........Always makes me squarm when I see them tossed out on the street also...
Why not a metal container with sand in it for butts........ [clappy]
