I am new to gardening and I live on an army post, so it's hard to be ultra extravagant. However, I'm looking for some nice ideas on flowers to plant and trees/bushes to plant this spring. I live in Kansas(northeast), and I don't even know what zone I am in. Can anybody please help or give some suggestions? Thanks

Hi there Carol Ann. Kansas is in Zones 5-6. You have quite a lot to work with flower wise. Bulbsa re good cuz you can overwinter them in teh ground. We just moved from NE and had about the same zones and my hostas did very well as well as cosmos, hollyhock, touch me nots, and marigolds. All of those are pretty easy to grow and take care of in a limited space.

I tried to email Carolann to let her know she has some answers. BUT it appears she does has opted out of receiving mail..Maybe I am just too much of a newbie to figure out how to email her.
Somehow I ended up emailing Triss instead..Sorry Triss...
Does anybody know if we can email Carolann directly or indirectly??? Can a Forum monitor email her???

That is ok, I did not mind the message. Sometimes we answer a new member and they don't get back to us. I do not like it when that happens either cuz I know we can help so much. Hopefully Carol Ann will check back in with us.

I know I have learned a lot from this forum. I enjoy posing a question and then getting feedback. It helps me get it right.
I use to be such a "seat of the pants gardener" meaning my phylosophy was buy it, plant it, if it lives it was meant to be....
Now I have learned that the ground needs to be conditioned and insects need to be controlled, etc etc etc....SOOOO I think my plants have a better chance of living now.
Everybody has been SO NICE...It is like having a bunch of helpful knowledgable neighbors.

There's that one saying something to the effect of....
Learn from other's mistakes, you don't possible have time to learn them all yourself....
How true.........
If you really~really~realllllllllly want to think about gardening.. If you start gardening now, and you're 40.. You're LUCKY to have 40 more springs/summers to do all your gardening that you want to do.....

I am the same way as you Oui, I never fertilize, never ammend the soil, just plant and hope for the best. I am learning that there are a lot better ways to do things and planning on making some changes in the way I garden this year.
