No, I ain't Texas born, but I got here as soon as I could!!
I originally hail from sunny South Africa & came to TX by way of NJ. I am a gardening addict & my "vision" for my l'il piece of TX dirt is to try & propagate as many of my beloved plants indigenous to S. Africa which I was unable to in NJ.
May 10th, 2006 I graduated as a TX Master Gardener - it was quite a challenge but I needed to familiarise myself with local "soil" conditions. Not quite accurate; I sorely needed all the help I could find as it just ain't soil/dirt but miserable grey gumbo clay!
I started my garden from scratch in March 2004 & am delighted with the progress.

I hope to be able to contribute in any way that I can. Questions about plants of Southern Africa are always welcome.

I'm a native of Texas that has been transplanted to Louisiana (via my husband ), and might be able to help with some questions. I'm curious to see what you have that grows in the states from S. Africa, and what zone you lived in while in S. Africa. Again, Welcome!

Southern Africa does not have climate zones as defined in the US. S. Africa is a relatively small country in comaprison, almost twice the size of Texas The area I lived in most of my life was known as the Highveld region. My home was 45 minutes north west of Johannesburg (5,708.66 feet above sea level) with approximately 30" summer rainfall. Summers are are hot with relatively low humidity except for after thunderstorms. Summer nights are cool because of the altitude. Winters are generally mild but it can get bitterly cold with the temps dropping to freezing & below. However, these frigid temps do not last long. Most winters, by about midday, one is tempted to shed winter clothes & don shorts & T shirts!
As for plants, there are many that have been adopted by US gardeners & I delight in finding them in local nurseries, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's etc. I'll try & compile a list but that will take time
I am currently putting up a Blog about my gardening & musings; have yet to add photographs but have posted most of the text. Will advise when the Blog is ready for viewing/comment!
