Hello out there , Both me and my garden are located in Killeen in Central Texas, about an hour north of Austin. I have been interested in gardening since I was a wee one growing up in California, I grew up around various Laotian and Thai families who had beautiful gardens, which I was allowed to pick from freely, it was wonderful! I had only one successful garden of my own before moving from there in 97 (I had a bumper crop of cukes - my favorite food ). I tried again when I married and relocated to Washington state, without much success. The season was just too short for me to know what to do. Now I live in Texas, and after having our house built and being told I could not take up space in the backyard for a garden - I made do with the length of one side of our house... It doesn't get as much sun as I'd like - I was told to paint my fence white - which has actually helped with that a bit... My first year I had really great success with eggplants, bell peppers, which I'd NEVER been able to grow before, and a few cabbages, and MANY cukes - the only thing with those, was that I got some sort of fungal disease... Kind of powdery mildew stuff, didn't affect the productivity of the plants, but it was really ugly, and the leaves yellowed and eventually died off. This year I got my soil right (I have 13 4 X 4 raised beds), I didn't overwhelm myself by trying to put everything in all at once, and my plants are doing great, only I'm battling caterpillars, aphids and another type of disease that's getting to my beans, which have been planted in the same space the cukes were... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Anyway, I'm really happy with my little garden this year, I'm out there every morning before I go in to the office (I own my own business), and I'm sitting out there whenever else I can, enjoying how much growth I see each day. I've already been able to harvest lettuce (homegrown really IS better than store bought!), some hot peppers and many cherry and Roma tomatoes, and was even able to establish an asparagus bed this year - yum! My interests, besides my garden, are cooking (I LOVE to cook, and can cook anything - I'm currently putting a cookbook together), I love to feed people, I'm a genuine Foodie, I love anything having to do with food. I never realized how much I loved food until I lost over 150 pounds. Now I'm able to ENJOY food. I also love to sew and be involved in my kids lives. I'll never be a Master Gardener, but I will always enjoy being out there with my veggies; even more so now that I'm actually getting the hang of it!
