I'm Serra and live in Adamstown, PA, in a home over my husband's shop. We live in Stoudtburg Village, reminiscent of Rothenburg, Germany, with colored homes, lots of walking pavement, and small gardens for everyone. I am from No. Virginia, left 3 years ago. I had a 1/4 acre piece of land there, which was fraught with challenges and hence huge learning experiences for me. I abhor chemicals, but sometimes learn I've been using them! I try to stay with neem, and other natural pesticides when needed. I had to spray my tulips with bitter apple finally...I don't mind sharing with the bunnies but I do mind them killing them! They don't like the daffodils...which is probably why my next door neighbor has so many healthy and abundant ones.
My passion is flower gardening, whether with bulbs, tubers, annuals or perrenials. Some of my favorites: Japanese toad lily; lily of the valley; roses; hostas; clematis and Buddlheia, or butterfly bush.
I also love to garden indoors throughout the year. I've grown trees from itty bitty plants that never indicated they'd grow so large! I have a dining room area with huge windows; it faces south. The north is so hot! But the south heats up later in the summer. They get light all year round.
I've been gardening since I was 8 years old. My Mother let me put the fish emulsion on each plant; then we go on slug hunts, she made it very fun, she'd put them in a bag so I never knew the gruesome part! The scent of your basic geranium and fish emulsion still remind me of her, as does the fresh earth. I am one of an uncountable number of generations who garden. The women, mostly; for my Mother it was flowers, then later veggies; my Grandmother's passion was for flower beds; her mother planted veggies by the moon. She lived to be 106 yo. At 100, she would be out in the dark in a chair telling a worker what to do.
My kids still like to say that Mom's playing in the mud, or Mom's doing "dig-dig". I hauled out some humoungous tree stumps in my day; but no more, I can't do that anymore. However, I will be pulling some periwinkle out if we ever get a decent day!
I hope I didn't post too long a note; I have other interests, such at collecting Boyds Bears; quilting; Fiber Art Postcards; Artistic Trading cards; and other crafts and artwork according to my whim.
I've two "seasoned citizen" cats and one adult puppy, nearly 2 years old. I say that because toy poodles are supposed to be full-grown at 6 mos. Well, she still seems a pup to me! However, she is full-grown...at 11 lbs. She's so lively. And happy. And wonderful.
I have a very happy marriage to a beautiful man who suits me just fine! One and only marriage...25 years. We have a beautiful married daughter and a son of whom I am very proud; they live in No. Virginia still.
That's the news of me that's fit to print! I have questions to ask, but will do searching first.
Thanks! It's an honor!

Welcome to the forum! You're going to love it here and learn a lot too. My favorite type of gardening is with flowers too, since it means I don't have to worry about the rabbits eating everything. I have lots hostas, lily of the valley, several clematis, and a butterfly bush, as well as many other perennials. Nice introduction! Hope to see you around the forums!
Have a beautiful day!

Thanks princess and patches! It's always good to be welcomed. I have a lot to learn! Maybe everyone does, that's why we're here? First think I need to learn is how to find the threads I'm interested in and how to be notified when new posts are made to the threads.

Thanks for the welcomes Penny and Cindy! I gardened all evening yesterday. Dug out 80+ pounds of concrete and all of the periwinkle. I need the room for my plantings. Replaced it all with good earth.
I'm going to enjoy it here, but still have to read those FAQ's! When I get the time. My BODY hurts! But it's a good hurt.

If you know you're going to do heavy stuff/strenuous activities... Take aspirin ahead of time before the project.... *it reduces swelling early, so there's not so much swelling in the first place*
