Hi! I'm Sweet-tea! I'm originally from the south and I love anything southern or tropical! I joined this site because I adore flowers and plants, but I seem to like things that don't grow as well where I live now And well, I'm pretty bummed about it. So I thought the people here could help me figure out how to make it work First off, my favorite flower is the gardenia, I grew up smelling these fragrant flowers outside our window! I'd love to grow some at my house now, but I live in the northwest and seem to kill them. But all the websites where people sell these plants all say they're hardy in zones 7-10, and the N.W. is a zone 8, so what's the deal? Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi sweet-tea, I grow gardenias in my zone 9 Calif. But It's a chore to get them past the first winter even here. I protect them with some type of covering. Then there is the first summer in my semi-desert environment. Keeping them hydrated without drowning them is tricky too. Welcome to the forums. there are several people from WA here that may be able to help you.

Welcome to the Forum! We have something in common because the gardenia is one of my favorite flowers too, and I love the heavenly sweet scent. I live in zone 5, but about 15 years ago I successfully was able to keep one alive in my office for over 9 years and it grew rather large. When I closed my practice and tried to take it with me, it didn't tolerte the move and I eventually lost it. We're glad to have you aboard and you're going to love it here.
Have a beautiful day!
