when we came home tonight, this critter was on my porch.

i had to fight to keep scott and matthew from killing it, but like it told them, at least they are native... and not rodents!

you know, if you are looking at them in the face, they are almost cute!

Uhhhhh Jiffy.... [lala] [lala]

I just noticed that the mouse's head in your yellow mouse pin has got the same shape as the possum's in the first pic. Maybe I need to break out my photo editing software for a quick color change.....

[grin] [grin] [tongue] [tongue]

And Jiffymouse is a lot better than Jiffypossum... [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Jiffy, the night secretary at school works with a rescue service and she takes the baby possums, whose mother has been killed, home to raise until they're big enough to let back in the wild. She has even brought some to school and they are adorable. [Smile] I've even held some of them and they love [Love] to cuddle in your hand just like a kitten. [Wink] I'm really not too crazy about the adult possums and I don't think I could say they are cute! [Frown] [Roll Eyes] With those BIG claws they are kinda scary! [scaredy]

Besides, their teeth, they can do a lot a damage with their claws! [Eek!] It's not a critter I would want to encounter when it was mad. [Roll Eyes] I don't like pain! [Frown] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Here is mine that was on my front porch at about 3:00 AM back in October. I handed it a pizza slice, but it hissed at me. As far as I know it hasn't been back, but I now have a Barred Owl on the peak of the roof each night, about 8 feet above the spot where my computer is.

[thumb] cute thorny. mine looks like it has had more fights, more pink and ruffling on the ears.

it ran under the shed.

the reason the men wanted to shoot it was because

a) they can be very mean when they feel threatened (and he was pretty threatened where he was)

b) they can carry rabies (although no more so than a squirrel)

c) we have an outside cat that the men thought was threatened (as if that was the first time the cat encountered the possum [nutz] )

d) they've always heard they are pests, and someone even almost had them convinced that they were rodents [Mad]

i explained that, a) you'd be mean if you were threatened too, b) squirrels are as bad or worse for rabies, and bats ARE worse, something we have plenty of, c) if the cat has been out that long (several weeks) and still has all her fighting tools (claws, teeth, etc) she is in no danger from the 'possum, and d) they are marsupials, not rodents.

my final argument that got them to run it off rather than shoot is was that they are native to this area, and harmless as critters like that go. now, armadillos on the other hand... [Mad] we won't go there.

thorny, they are only nice until they dig holes in your yard that cause you to break your ankle. and breed in your culverts, producing 4 more exactly like the parent, that dig even more ankle breaking holes...

and we won't even discuss the destruction to my gardens [Mad]

I have a fascination for owls. I think they are the neatest bird. When I was teaching, I always did an owl unit and the kids got to disect owl pellets. It was always a highlight of the year. We also hatched butterflies, and studied bats. Kids LOVE that kind of stuff and remember it years later.

I don't think they'll go as far north as y'all's houses , Sybil and Penny, so don't worry. They're are very non-belligerent and quite peaceful anyways, even if somewhat destructive to lawns, but they WON'T attack you.

glad you liked them april.

the short update is that "henry" took up residence under my front porch (i could care less about that, doesn't bother me in the least). he's just eating the leftover cat food from my feeding stinker (my indoor/outdoor cat).

we were discussing henry last night, and my husband said "henry? that possum has a name? now i'll never be able to shoot it! [shocked] " i laughed and said yes, the kids' Godmother named him just to keep you from shooting him! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

then my husband started muttering about "hating @#$%$@# tree-huggers" with a smile on his face... so the possum is henry and safe [thumb]

i'll get more pics when/if i can.

Penny, of course, they named him!!! [Smile] That's what I usually do with any critters [Wink] ! BUT, contrary to what Patty may say or think [tongue] , I really haven't named all my worms [Frown] - yet!!! [Big Grin] I have a Chipmunk I call "Chip", I guess that's not very original, but I liked it! He has lived under my house for two years, and he has a front door, side door, and back door to his home.
