My name is Jim, and I live in Rochester, NY, home of snowdrifts and long winters.
I'm 52 years old and am just starting out gardening seriously. I've done the requisite tomatoes before, but this time I'm going for some other crops, most obviously MELONS. LOL.
Looking forward to learning and talking with you all.

Pull up a chair and tell us a bit more about yourself?
I'm just a couple months older than you, and spent my 3rd and 4th years of college at the U of R - you aren't kidding about the snowdrifts! One time I had been in the infirmary for 2 days, and when I came out, I couldn't find my car parked on the street - it was completely covered in snow!
Did you happen to go there as well? Lived in Rochester long?
I haven't been back since I graduated - I bet it's changed quite a bit?

I moved here in 1988 after stints in NYC, Albany and DC. It has changed quite a bit since then, but the weather is still tough in the winter. Thank God I ski or I'd lose my mind here.
I went to college in Oswego, which is 10 times worse in the winter. Lots of snow, and that wind comes whipping in off the lake for an extra added bonus. BRRRRR.
Even with the weather, this is still a pretty nice place to live. Lots of cultural things, sports events, and, of course, skiing. I've done my part of the rat race in major cities, and I can say I don't really miss it at all.

Gotcha, Jim. I grew up in Westchester - not too far from NYC. My dad had a camera shop on Fulton Street - not far from the World Trade Towers, and the South Street Seaport.
We have a slim chance to go up to Rochester the last weekend of November this year - still not sure if we will get to. Our daughter is an alternate in the All State Band for high schools, and the performance is at the Eastman School of Music - I really wanted to go back and visit, but it doesn't seem we'll get to this time - maybe next year.
