This afternoon, when I came home, I saw a few titmice eating the dry catfood that we put outside for Fraidy and Slinky! I've seen bluejays do that a few times too.

Is this normal?

What is a titmice? A bird?
(I'm not as smart as I act like I am!) [Embarrassed]

Now that Meg is no longer with us, I will ask questions that I wouldn't ask when she was here.

A Tufted Titmouse is a small bird that loves to eat Sunflower Seeds, Cindy. There are a LOT of them in our area.

Titmouses and other birds will eat dry cat or dog food at times. That is not unusual at all.

Do a Google Image Search on Tufted Titmouse for some good pictures. Here is a picture of one I took in my yard.

I hadn't realized Meg was gone. Then I looked back and saw her last posts were only shortly after my computer started smoking LSD and having some really bad trips.

Sounds like a really involved group computer game she'd gotten into.

But talking about weird birds, I have a bluejay that can make a call like a hawk. I think he does it to try to scare the other birds so he can pig out at the bird feeder.

That is WEIRD....You would think the birds would be afraid of being chased by a cat....

Blue Jays are FAMOUS for doing PERFECT hawk imitations. One of my Blue Jays was doing that very thing just yesterday. They also make an odd, "TOO-LOO" call. My 4-year-old grandson says that Blue Jays say, "GIH! GIH!".

Thornius: Is it true that Blue Jays are considered "terrorist birds" meaning they will chase other birds away?? Years ago I had a house that had cedar siding. There were birds nesting right in the side of the house in 2 spots. They had both knocked out a knot hole and were happily nesting. My ex wanted to just fill in the holes, with the nest and babies inside..<yuck>> which I thought was cruel. So in talking with one of my neighbors I was given the idea to put bird feed out to attract Blue Jays..The neighbor had told me that Blue Jays are "terrorist birds" and attracting them to my yard would scare off the nesting birds....

It actually did work. The birds left with their babies in tow. And I never had a nesting problem again...Was it the Blue Jays or just luck, I wonder....

Oui, we have them here and I often watch them. They do chase the other birds that are around. I spent almost a half hour the one day watching the Blues chase little birds from tree to tree. It almsot looked like a one-sided game of tag! [Big Grin]

Blue Jays are scavengers and often willattack and eggs or babybirds out of nests, so it MIGHT work.
