A Fortress

Only inches apart--
It might as well
Be miles.
The distance as great
As that between
The pain in our souls
And the smiles
On our faces
That never
Reach our hearts.
Feeling you slip
Further away,
Though I try so hard
To grasp tightly
The slender thread
That ties
Our lives together.
Masters of disguise,
You and I;
Hiding from the world
Behind this
Thin veneer of civility,
Never allowing
Harsh rays of reality
To pierce our fortress
Of lies,
Revealing failed
Hopes and dreams,
The secret sorrows shared.
How long
Till the walls crumble
And you are
Lost to me
Forever.

Some hearts, like evening primroses, open more beautifully in the shadows of life.
