Ok here is the next one. I couldn't remember how to spell the last word so I changed the title. I'm definitely getting old and losing it lol. Anyway I have good news today. The columbine sprouts seem to be doing very well. The golden shower orchid seems to be holding it's own. And the basil and coleus are still alive.

The grocery store onion is taking forever to make seeds. The flowers are all pretty much brown but no seeds yet. I am so ready to see the seeds lol.

I have to make myself one promise though. No more over crowding the beds grrrrrh. Nothing looks particularly good when I do that.

Other than that there is still no action on the miniature rose seeds, or any of the zinnia. I think that means I still harvested to early. I guess for the next batch I'll just wait until their is nothing but a cone left on the plant. And I so thought I had it right this time grrrh.

My little mum cutting that rooted isn't liking the heat and I really hate to loose that one but it looks like I'm going to.

The new pregnant onion seems to like it's new home and the catepillar cassula has got a bunch of buds on it. I'm hopping that it will actually flower. It's never done it before and it's being very shy. I know the petals on the flower are pink because it showed me one petal for about an hour but then it hid it again lol. I wish I knew what kind of plant that was.

I should take it outside and get a picture of it.

Maybe I will.

Right now I'm cooking southern fried chicken for the church elders. I don't want to do it later because it will be impossibly hot. It's not all that cool now.

I'm just not very good with the camera. And right now all I would get pictures off would be plants wilting in the 100+ temperatures. This is not what I had planned for this year at all. I'm going to have to focus on plants that do well in 7 to 10 zones rather than plants that do well in 3 to 7 zones if this keeps up. Even the snapdragons are shriveling up and giving up the ghost.

How is the vine that got the weed killer on it? Showing any signs of coming back?

TK, I don't have 1 zinnia growing this year. I've planted and planted seeds and can't get one to even start. Wonder how Cindy's are doing? Do you think it's the heat? Those petunias we've discussed seem to do great in the heat.

I do have one bed of zinnias. They are the ones I got from Cindy. And they are great looking. Mostly in the hot pink and orange colors. The main thing I've noticed is that the flowers themselves are smaller this year.

Of the ones that I harvested from my plants last year only 3 germinated and they have never flowered. But then they are over in the garden bed where everything is shorter than normal. I will definitely be composting my little heart out over there this fall.

The giant zinnia's that I received in the round robin never even gave me one seedling.

As far as this year is concerned. One of the zinnias that I planted to make sure my seeds were viable has sprouted. I have several more in yogurt cups to make sure I'm not rushing the harvesting. If they come up I'll feel confident that they are ok to trade.

Hey Squirrel,

I know exactly what you mean. With the temperatures soaring last week I was trying to water twice a day. As soon as the sun came up and then again right before it went down. And it appears that almost everything survived. Even one of the delphium. And I was sure it was a goner. Some of the snapdragon appear to be gone but I won't pull them up until after the fall because I have seen them come back when they have looked dead.

Hi Penny,

About the Banana Melon vine, well it's pretty brown in most places. But it has put out a couple of blossoms so there is hope. Sorry your pictures didn't turn out. Hope you have better luck next time. I've had horrible luck with pictures lately.

The Aztec Horned Melon on the other hand is growing it's little heart out. I've got it growing over a stump, and up an old clothesline pole and even up an old broom handle. And it is still trying to grow up the cleome and zinnia's planted near to it lol. If it produces buds as well as it grows I should be in good shape lol. But so far not one bud.

Hi Bestofour,

I'm of two minds when it comes to these petunias. I think they must be the wave type because they are between 6 and 8 inches tall. I interplanted them with some tall plants and I'm finding that as they grow they get leggy and not very attractive overall. Althought they do continue to bloom very well. I should probably prune one back to see how it would do but as usual I'm afraid that I'll kill it lol. One of them has died. I'm not sure why. Could be it got to crowded. The cleomes in that pot have huge stocks.

I think I'll do the pot in all petunias next year and see how that goes.

Did I mention that I planted 24 carnation seeds? I'm hoping that they sprout and I can transplant them into the garden so that I will have blooms next year. Then I can do the same in the spring and that should get my clump blooming every year. That would be so cool.

I found that some of my petunias were dying Tammy and i am sure it was because of crowding, so i took them all out of my front window box and put all of the same color geraniums in for the rest of the summer.
I will know for next summer to leave more space for them, they were dead and had started to rot, so out they came.
How are the carnation seeds coming along, any sprouts yet? I have a package that i didnt plant, so i am anxious to hear how you make out.

I'm sorry about your petunias. So far I've only lost one that made it to maturity. And that was a pretty light violet one with purple veining. Hopefully it was cross polinated with one of the others and I'll have some of the seeds for it next year.

I shouldn't see any of the carnations for at least 7 days but I have one sprout already. I think of course that it must be a weed. Since I'm using my compost for my potting soil it does happen lol.

You won't believe what I just finished doing. Yeppers buying seeds. I'm sure your going to ask why when I didn't even have space to plant everything I had from last year, but I couldn't resist.

There was an advertisement for 99 cent seeds free shipping. Now how could I pass that up I ask you. It's the company called watersuntogether. And there were some veggies I wanted to plant this year that I didn't have so that's where I started. And then I couldn't pass up looking at the herbs and haveing looked at them... I of course had to look at the flowers. Fortunately with those prices being so cheap it only cost me 11.88 for my shopping spree. I am so bad.

Did I tell you I have lots and lots of columbine sprouts from Bills package of seeds. I can't wait to see what kind of columbine I end up with. This will be so cool.

On the down side I lost just about all of the yellow snapdragons and a good portion of the pink. 90 degrees F. just doesn't agree with them at all. Hopefully the seeds I saved will have all of the colors so I'll still have a colorful spread next year.

Well the state is going to take this property inorder to enlarge Route one sometime in the next year or two. So it wouldn't really be worth it to try and recoup more of the slope. Unless I just planted wild flowers and let them fend for themselves lol.

I hope that where ever I end up I will be able to plant a garden and it might even be on a gentler slope lol.

If not some seeds will last years so I'll have time to figure out something. Maybe the worlds largest container garden?

You know me I don't give up easily.

Well it's just about nap time so I'll talk to you later.

I'm not even tempted to take pictures of the garden right now because everything is trying to recover from being weed killer sprayed. So everything has brown spots on it.

At least it appears everything survived. I'm rather suprised by that but it's a happy suprise.

Did I mention that I've harvested 3 of the paparika peppers. I should call them by their right name. They are Boldog Hungarian Spice Peppers. I have them drying now and then I'll grind them up and have them for paparika. I love being able to make up some of my own spices. It's makes me feel really good.

Some person plucked my brandywine tomato off of the branch before it was completely ripe and stuck it in the peppers patch. Fortunately it hadn't rotted before I found it. I have my fingers crossed that it will ripen in the apartment.

Well other than that. I think I'm ready for another nap. But I'll check in later and see if you have your pictures uploaded yet.

Hi Penny,

I love the window box. I hope you'll be able to get a brighter picture of it at some point. Shade plants are so hard to get a good picture of unless you have a flash aren't they. That's the same problem I have...no flash.

I like the hydrangea tree screen that's really pretty. Do they keep their leaves all year long?

Is that your shed you have all prettied up like a dollhouse? I think it's so cute I'm ready to move into it.

Your yard is looking great, it's so green and lush. And the tomatoes are really looking good.

I think I finially figured out why I have short stem this year. At the end of last years growing season I put down a layer of leaves over the flower beds thinking that it would decompose and be good for the soil. What I forgot is that while leaves are decomposing they take nitrogen away from the soil. And so that's why all my plants are dwarfs this year.

So what I'm doing to fix it is scraping off all the leave mulch that is left and then I'm going to replace it with the finished compost as I get it. I may even buy some of the garden soil at the store on payday. Just to give me a jumpstart.

My window box...a few days ago i had tons of plants in there and decided that i didnt want them anymore..so i ripped everything out and put in red geraniums, thats all..i think some of my neighbors thought i was crazy for taking it all out.
This is my first year with the hydrangea tree, i had another small tree there but thats the area where we had to dig up the lawn when our sewer lines went crazy and the roots on the old tree were really big, so we tossed it out and put in the hydrangea, its supposed to have a shallow root system.
That is our shed...wait...Brad's shed! Its his space..he just loves it and we are so happy with how the yard has turned out, it was a ton of work but well worth the end product.
I will get some more pics of the window box for you so that you can see whats there.
Thanks for the compliments Tammy.

Whew,

Watering the churches landscaping is an all day task with just hoses. I'm glad they are thinking up a new idea. Fortunately tuesday the missionaries showed up to finish the job. I'd gotten about 3/4th's of it done when I had to go inside and companion my fellow family history center volunteer. Wouldn't you know that it would be a busy day at the center lol.

It looks that of all the rose of sharon seed pods I found only one was viable. But that's 40 seeds so I'm not going to complain. I'm going to save one packet and start them this winter for the ladies of the church. The other I'll put in the seed exchange.

Other than that I'm chopping off the seed pods from the cleome so they can put the rest of their energy into more and more flowers. And I'm still harvesting petunia seeds. And zinnia seeds.

Waste seeds, never lol. Ok well almost never. I am wasting the cleome seeds because there are just to many of them. I only had about 6 plants and they have made thousands of seeds. Talk about overkill. the other one's that I'm wasting are the zinnia seeds. I am so determined to make sure they are viable that I'm waiting too long to harvest them and they are falling on their own leaves. I bet if I cover the soil in the flower box where they are planted this year with a layer of compost I'll have a bed full of zinnias next year without having to do anything else to it lol.

Rose of sharon is actually a relative of the hardy hybiscus rather than a rose. The name is very misleading. But I'm happy to have some of the seeds too.

Now if I can just get more of the compost cooking I'll be in good shape.

Well be prepared to devote some space to seed harvesting because once you get into it, it's addictive like everything else about gardening lol.

Some of the seed pods make great additions to dried flower arrangements. And then there is the over crowded box of seeds packaged and ready to go. And then there is the box where I need the seed packets that I've made up but haven't used yet. And then there are the glue sticks and scotch tape for making and sealing the seed packets. And of course Why save seeds if your not going to trade lol. So then there is the drawer full of cards, note pads, different size evelopes, bubble wrap, stamps and then stickers because they are just so darn cute lol.

Do I sound like I'm hooked? I am. And it's all worth it when something blooms in the garden and I say to myself. And that's the flower I got from (____________). Or that's the tomato that I hand polinated, harvested and then grew from seed. Woohoo. It just adds to the joy.

Well I got confused today. I thought it was friday. So my garden got fertilized one day early. No problem of course just funny. I also planted the next crop of lettuce seeds one day early. Also not a problem. So since I was in a get-er-done mood I also harvested the basil and chives. And got a nice load of both. And the zinnia and pink cleome. And there was even another ripe boldog hungarian spice pepper to harvest. Those things smell hot when they are being ground I know that now lol.

Of course the wheat grinder ceased up on my right after I got started and now I can't get the screw out of it. Grrrrh, I think maybe that's why they last owners had it out in the garage.

I have to fertilize the grass and its been too hot to do it, so maybe one night next week, its supposed to hit mid 30's here for the weekend, but i havent done anything to my flowers at all this year, which is odd for me not to?
I have never heard of the hungarian pepper, may have to look for that one for next year.

I've gotten a bunch of seeds from them. Let me know if you want a packet. I save seeds big time as you know lol.

Because I grew many types of peppers this year I can't swear they will breed true but I'm hoping so since they were separated from the other peppers by about 100 feet.

I'm feeling froggy because I got out there at 6:00 am and got the compost turned. And I noticedc that there is a good bit that I'll be abled to used this fall all ready. So everything is good at that end of things.

Yesterday I took the time to take off all the brown leaves where I accidently sprayed the banana melon with weed killer. It is looking much better now. I just wish it would produce a melon. I really really want it to. But I can't even find a female flower. Cross your fingers for me.

I have your address and it should go out in todays post. I hope you enjoy them next year as much as I have this year. They really make some supper long peppers. I planted them in 100 percent compost and they really took off.

Something else that was a really good producer was the tiny tim cherry tomatoes. I hope I can successfully keep that plants cuttings growing through out the winter because I'd really like to have them in the garden again next year.

The only peppers I like for the most part are the Bell peppers and the banana peppers. The Boldog Hungarian Spice peppers for making paparika are the first time I've ever grown anything that looks like a chili pepper. And I have to admit that when I'm grinding it up it smells more like chilli powder than paparika lol.

Other than that I'm just happy I managed to get the compost pile turned again. The humidity rating must be really up there this week because I come in absolutely soaked in sweat.

It is so cool to have veggies on the table that came out of the garden. I'm currently trying to figure out a good way to powder my dried peppers. Not having much luck yet but I'll keep trying.

Thanks Penny,

I've only gotten 4 carnations out of the 24 I planted. But then it's been about 8 degrees hotter than they like for germination too so that might have something to do with it. I'm hoping the other carnation seed pod yields a bunch of viable seeds. But even four is better than the one plant I ended up with this year lol.

Other than that I've still only got 3 lettuce sprouts out of the 15 I planted lol. But the columbines are doing nicely. So at least I'm not loosing out on everything.

No roses yet. I think I may have to sow some more of those. One day I'll get a sprout. The ones outside lost all their leaves and I was worried that they were dead. But they have tiny new leaves now. So I guess they just got to hot during the heat wave we had. I'm glad they are comming back.

I'm thinking that for this fall I'm going to remove all the plants from the beds and then make a mixture of potting soil and compost and spread that in the beds and then put the plants back. I don't have enough compost so I'll have to buy some. And then in the spring maybe add one of those slow release fertilizers to help the annuals get started. I definitely want better looking plants next year. Grrrrh lol.

I think I'll bring in the herbs that might make it indoors. Like the spearamint, pineapplemint, oregano and thyme. Leaving the rosemary outside of course. The sage is already in a pot so I'll just bring it in too.

That's my plan as of today anyway lol.

I checked my tomatoes last night and they are looking good, nice and green, and no sign of any little critters munching them, maybe thats because its in a raised bed??
I have heard too that roses are slow to catch on and grow, so be patient and they'll grow for you.

I hope your tomatoes continue to be free of critters. It's so much fun to watch them rippen. I'm not going outside to day. The temperature is suppose to reach triple digits and that's something I can not do. I may step outside around 8 pm and see if everything survived.

TK, do you cook a lot. I hardly ever cook so I don't plant many herbs. I've got rosemary planted but I rarely use it.

I cook fall through spring and then spend as much time messing with the plants as I can. Then I go back to cooking lol. The rosemary definitely doesn't do well for me so it's safest if it stays outside. Same for the miniature roses. They just will not survive indoors with me. I think I baby them to death.

Nice thing about LDS almost all of our women cook so I can always dry and share the herbs and ever give away fresh.

I guess the only reason I bring in any of the herbs is I'm lazy about going outside to pick it when the weather gets cooler lol.

This year I'm going to have to pot everything up for a few days while I amend this "soil" i've got. I plant to pull up the soil that's there and throw it in the compost heap and put down nice finished compost. That way next year I'll have really good soil to plant stuff in. And I can rearrange the plants more to my liking. I'm always messing with stuff lol. As soon as the temperatures go down I'm going to be sifting my compost again. Theres lots more to get out of the pile. And then I have fresh grass to heat it up again.

Your very very welcome Penny.

This is about the time you should be seeing tomatoes I think. I just started mine way to early and then the really high temperatures have rippened them way early too. And I think all the bees may have helped too. It makes me think I should always have a couple of hollyhocks around the garden somewhere.

Well Peppers and tomatoes are really easy. Just remember to give them stakes to climb lol. They start out so small but then over night they will shoot up. It's amazing.

Light and humidity are to things that make having plants inside dificult. Do you have an east facing window that gets morning sun? Or will you rig up some florescent lights? And as far as humidity putting a pan of water close to the plants usually works ok. Sometimes in the fall I'll keep a pan of water with spices in it on warm. It makes the house smell great and my plants in the kitchen really love it. That's where I keep my plants that like it extra warm. It has an east and a north facing window.

I water exactly like everyone says not to. I give them alittle water everyday. Except the sucullents(ssp). They get water when they are bone dry. The pregnant onion I haven't got a patern down for how to water it yet. Hopefully I'll figure out it's needs. I know it's supose to get dry between waterings.

Well the Dahlia is doing great. It's growing at a rapid pace. And the Aztec Horned Melon has taken over it's area of the garden and now is heading for the zinnia. The cleome that was in the pot with it is completely covered in vines. So is the stump in front of it and most of the clothes line on the other side. The garbage men even moved the dumpster because the vine is invading that space to. And still not one bloom in sight. I plant to get some flower booster when I go to the store. Which will be as soon as it cools down. I think the news said that would be this weekend. Makes me wish the weekend was already here.

Other than that the heat has put pretty much everything into a dormant state or just killed it outright. Even the sage are wilting into nothing. And I don't even want to think about the snapdragons that have dried up.

Well I hope that you are able to grow the pepper seeds indoors so you get an early start with them. They were really nice peppers for me. They take a fair amount of time to turn red but they do so be patient.

Thanks for the great advice Tammy...i am going to give it a try and see how it goes, the window i am going to put it in isnt a east facing window, but, it does get alot of sun and the room is warm, actually its the laundry room, so its cozy and they should do fine in there and they are out of reach of the kitties, should they want to explore.
My black eyed susan vine has just now started to bloom, i was getting worried about them too and they went in before my morning glories, but they have finally bloomed. I love dahlia's and they are so drought resistant or i find them to be anyway.

Congrats on all the posts. Your doing great. Today was get out there and water and fertilize day. So that's what I did. Now I'm trying to cool off. I have to say fertilizing the orchids is the hardest part of the day because I never know if they are getting enough food. Since they are sitting in bark everything runs right out. I cut all the hycinth bean vines down to almost nothing. They aren't dead but they might as well be. They are in to small of a pot so they are just terrible looking. Next year I'll know to put them in a big pot.

Other than that I didn't get any lettuce out of the second plantng of seeds. That's upsetting. But later today I'll put some more in and see if they do any better.

This weekend when the temperatures are suppose to cool I'm thinking of putting out some sunflowers. The one I have something stressed it and the leaves turned black. So needless to say the blooms aren't doing very good either. As usual I'll do better next year. That's if I don't forget everything between now and then lol.

Have a great day.

Thanks Tammy [kissies] [thumb] .

I have to get out and thin out my tomato plants..all of a sudden they have taken off like crazy and they are so big now...there are alot of branches that i can pinch off and get rid of...my poor peppers are being over taken by tomato's and thats funny because remember that i told you i was worried my plants were "dud's"!!
Well i am eating crow now and soon will have more tomato's then i'll know what to do with.

My sunflowers that i planted a few weeks back are doing good and no critters eating them..a few little spots have been munched but just bugs...i can handle that but not the bunnies again.
Your sunflowers will perk right up for you once you get them out..good luck with them.

I was sure I posted something after your post but it looks like it disappeared.

Well I'm glad your veggies finally took off. I thought they were about due. Mine were way early. I can never wait to plant the seeds and then I end up with everything working out strangely. Either it all dies because a frost comes along or I have early everything when it's a warm year.

This year I lost a bunch of stuff because I was planting it way to early. And then some of it was just slow to come up so I ended up with stuff planted on top of other stuff. It was very very messy. lol.

Today the only thing I managed to get done was the watering and the compost pile turned. That compost pile is very very large. And it is almost all grass and sticks. But the poplar is starting to drop leaves so everything is right on schedule. I need to water the compost pile this evening and watch it steam. It is plenty hot. Then if the weather stays nice I'll sift it on Monday. I hope the weather stays nice. It's been way to hot here.

Lastnight while Brad was cutting the grass i thinned out my tomato plants...the heat and the rain..they were going CRAZY!!!
I did take out one plant, it looks like it had been crowded and wasnt doing too goo, so rather the have it take up space...out it came and it gave the others ones more room.
My peppers are coming along and getting bigger each day...infact i am going to take some pics today and load them tomorrow (sunday) and organize my PB, so that its easier to find.
have a great day!
