I know you're not supposed to start seeds yet, but I couldn't wait - I've been bad and have been working on my seeds since the new year.
I have a lamp with a fluorescent light in our office and I'm using it to fool the plants into thinking it's summer.
As you can see, I'm not doing bad - my allysum is coming up, some zinnia that I collected from a few dead heads in the fall. Some of the plants there are ones that need nursing - took a bath in the cold spell - too drafty in the window, I guess.
As you can see there are some small twigs (eunymous) that I was able to keep alive for the past 6 weeks or so - a couple of them have taken root. The other day I poked them into some rooting hormone and am expecting nothing but the best from them.
Since Weezie told me about euynomous I've been coveting an image of it being the star of this summer's garden.
The stuff in the muffin tin on the pink towel. Ha ha! I just took my chances with that - 6 cups in the tray - one of them has those little nuts that fall from the trees - I think they're cherry blossoms - some kinda' cherry tree - maybe beechnut, I don't know what you call it. I'm curious to see what they'll do.
Another one holds a few bits of a planter's contents that one of the tenants found in somebody's garbage - I used the planter itself to hang on the tree and stuck artificial flowers in it - it makes a bright little statement out there in all that snow right now.
There's some green pepper seeds that I dried a while ago, a coupla' Idunnos.

The geranium is ok - but I put some iforgetwhatthehelliputinthere in the soil underneath.
That geranium, by the way, is the direct descendent of a large one I started growing in 1995. This one is a clipping of a clipping of a clipping kinda' thing. I raised it up from a little wee shoot I managed to get going.
Its partner (which was cut off a few weeks ago and re-lanted) is faring quite well in the window.

And somebody threw out a nice jug - it's that green glass stuff. I don't know if they left it under the office window for me or were outside in their car hoochin' it up and got sloppy.
But I don't care - I'm going to get a pair of those long tweezer things and see if I can do a garden in a bottle.
I'm really 'in-the-zone' right now - I feel like re-creating the world.
I wrote a four stanza poem for a contest today and I'm hoping to win. If I don't win, I'll behave in my usual ladylike manner. I'll go round to the publishers' office and blow their heads off!

You can see that big pot in the background - it's in shadow, of course - that has my eucalyptus fronds and a few sprigs from that bouquet I got at Christmas.
I put the four avocado seeds in it - gave up waiting for them to sprout in the water.

LOL, Carly, you crack me up! Fortunately, where I live I can just set my starts in the window sill and watch them go. I too have a geranium that is the offspring of an old gal, kind of like those sourdough starters that get passed around. It's just whimpering along though, so I'm hoping this spring she comes on nice and strong. I also have 4 avocado pits going, and finally after three months, two have started rooting. I put one in soil right away, and am leaving the other alone, just in case the other dies. I have never ever been able to grow one yet, but my friend up the street just throws them in the ground and they flourish. Go figure. Anyway, I liked your little arrangement; nothing like a little greenery to brighten up a winter day. Aren't plants fascinating? I could tinker with them all day!!!

That's so cool Carly!! Ya know, I picked up some planting stuff at Walmart.. those little peat pots, and some kinda disc looking thing that you soak in water, then they expand, and you put your seed right in that. I think I might just have to give it a go, with all that snow out side, and 20-30 below zero windchills today!! I don't think I'm stepping outside today!

Carly, one more thing I forgot to mention. I used to love making terrariums(as we seemed to have an excess of extremely large wine bottles laying around, hmmm), and one thing that was invaluable for me was a apring-loaded pick up tool. I think I got it for like, $3-$4 at Home Depot. I was able to control the plant really well without damaging it. Too bad I didn't sterilize the bottle well enough; as the poor old plants got too tipsy and passed out. Anyway, hope that helps, and good luck!

I started several Camelot Series Foxgloves January 1st...they just recently grew their first set of true leaves, but are still quite small. I have them under grow lights as well. Because our weather is usually mild in March I will probably plant them outside sometime later that month, assuming I can keep them alive until then! They are supposed to bloom the first year if started early enough. I had a whole bunch of Foxglove seedlings in one area of my back yard, but I had a tree cut down recently and the guys trampled all over them and they died.
Those little black berries I dried - got them from a bush on wright ave in very late autumn
Little black arrows - I call them my 'sweater picks'. They are the little things that come out of things like tiny daisies, cosmos, etc. Dried Oct 3rd 2k4
Little blue/purple flowers - lobelia, most likely - they were dried september 26th 2k4
Grasses - that fuzzy stuff - mostly fluff planted along with a big black seed
What I call balcony drops - they are the flowers that fell from the balcony upstairs - dried oct 8th 2k4
Purple aster - bagged the deadheads Sept 25th - dried by Sept 29th 2k4
Small purple asters - bagged 'em Sept 25th - dried by sept 29th 2k4

Jeff went outside and got that bottle from the bushes - it's absolutely beautiful!
I don't really know how to do this, but I'm going to wait till it's warm enough to get some pretty stones from the beach - what I can do right now is use a package of bath salts I got a couple of Christmases ago from my daughter.
There are five pastel colours - I'm going to layer them one over the other and leave it like that for a while.
The stones can go in later, then whatever kind of soil I need and the plants.
I'll show the picture once I've put the salts in.
Whoa! I'm looking forward to doing this.

I would love to start some of my seeds now, but where I live it's too early yet.....last year I was ambitious and started them around now and most of them didn't make it until spring because they got to big and I didn't have the room to keep them all....
This year I'll be starting them out around the end of February/beginning of March.....can't wait!!! I love watching all of the little seeds growing--it's pretty amazing really!

Carly, bless you for your courage !! Right now, I'm completely and utterly obsessed with narrowing down my tomato seed choices. It's a tactical trick to distract me from starting anything "accidentally", LOL.

Well, I'll have my hits n' misses, I guess - I'd be pleased as punch if some of them got too big for the house - I'd make room - I have them in the building's office anyway - I could just move 'em out to the lobby.
My husband is the super/cum/manager (chief-cook-bottle-washer) so I can do that.
I'll be getting one of those spring-loaded hoo-ma-jigs that Amy mentioned - for sure - I worked through that bottle project today with just the handle of a cooking spoon and a pair of scissors that were too short.
Jeff's looking around in all his tools to see what he can find but I think I'll buy the proper tool.
Actually I want him to buy me an electric hand saw that I can re-charge - it would be good for my stick projects. I'm going to build little hobbit houses in my little planting spaces so that would help a lot.
I think he's nervous of me cutting myself - he doesn't like to use those things himself.
Oooooooooh! Burnt myself out today - I took the day off - no writing, no puzzle construction, no work of any kind - just my indoor gardening.
Now I'm finding there's too much to do - ha! And I was feeling blue cause I didn't really have any gardening - there are a zillion things I can do right now.
Oh, c'mon spring!
