I was looking out the window this morning and my sparrows in the bush were making SO much noise...

Well I saw something BIG in the bush, I thought it was a cat jumping up to get them....I opened the door and it was a HUGE bird...I'm telling you I think it may have been a hawk....It flew away as soon as it heard the door open. I think it was attacking them....and all day my faithful sparrows avoided that bush, and that's their favorite one....

I've never noticed one around here before, but mom said she has a few times--but not for years...

Wish I had my camera with me....Never do when I really want it. [Razz]

Most likely was a hawk, Possibly a Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk. Both species like to stake out feeders and bird baths. Both species are almost identical in appearance I've had Cooper's circling my yard for a year or two now, and one flew into a telephone pole and killed itself in my yard this Summer.

It was terrible to watch, but sort of neat to see it at the same time....

I'm the defender of my little sparrows, I'll go out at 6 in the morning with the broom in my robe to chase a cat away from them....and when I found dead birdies in my yard that fell out of their nest I was sooooo sad.... [tears]

Darn it though, I could still kick myself for not having my camera ready.....

A hawk (red-shoulder I think) landed on the top of the basketball backboard outside my large kitchen window while I was eating lunch one day and sat and stared at me the entire time I was there. When I finally got up and left he flew away too. Very unnerving.

I think hawks are beautiful too. Just not when they are attacking little birds. The most common hawk around here is the Cooper's Hawk I think. They circle around my GIANT old oaks and attack the nests that are near the top sometimes. I know they are attacking because I will see the momma and pappa birds just going nuts and trying to chase it off. What I do not understand is one neighbor has 100 acres and the other 10, both have fields and there are lots of mice and rabbits in those fields..Why does the hawk have to terrorize the birds?? I actually drove up on one on the road once. It was feeding on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. When I drove up it picked that rabbit up and flew away with it. I mean it was a large rabbit. The wingspan was larger then the width of my car..and I drive a Durango..My neighbor told me that hawks will stay away from your yard if you have a dog. I have a dog and I have never seen a hawk near my immediate back yard where my feeders and bird houses are. But they will terrorize the back of my property where the large Oaks are.

We have woods in the back yard, 2 or 3 acres, and there is often a hawk out there in the tallest trees. I've seen it misjudge the distance between the trees and end up flying sideways to get out from among the trees. My neighbor has a creek running through her side yard where the hawk catches snakes and sometimes perches in a tree outside her kitchen window. She said it's like watching it suck up a giant strand of spaghetti and not very appealing. Sometimes it raids another neighbors koi pond. I've seen it be attacked by a flock of crows but it usually ends up dining on a crow.

I bet he is saying "I meant to do that"
