I didn't post it last week because it's embarrasing to be sick all the time but I've got pneumonia and strep throat. I got an antibiotic that I started last Tuesday which did not do the trick. I went to a place called Monroe Urgent Care today because I can't stop coughing, it's not really for urgent stuff it's a doctors office that's open 7 days a week, and I have not improved and now have a sinus infection to go along with everything else. I've started a new antibiotic.

Here's hoping that the new medicine does the trick this time, Sheri. Take good care of yourself, and don't worry about any of the everyday stuff... it will all take care of itself too.

Thanks you guys. I think rest is the key. I don't have any stamina. I have to lay down a lot but right now I can't sleep because of the cough. Hopefully this antibiotic will kick in soon.

Sheri, not to be gross, but is it a dry hacking cough? If there is stuff laying in your chest it might be good to get an expectorant(sp?).
Rest a lot, and get your fluids, and you know they say chicken noodle soup really does help when you are sick----something in it, or maybe it's psychological...not sure....

I ALWAYS have some made up! I personally prefer split pea w/ham soup when I am sick...Darin always wants home made potato soup, but chicken noodle is always a good one. I have a "soup" section in my freezer so it is always handy!

I'm lots better today. I've got to go back to work on Monday. I'm already dreading it. One of my goals, while I was out with this surgery, was to find another job. I haven't felt like doing it so it's back to the old grind. I have asked a job placement service to help me out so maybe there's hope. One of my sisters thinks stress from my job is part of the reason that I can't get over all this sickness. She said I need an anti depressant but I don't want to take medicine regularly and I'd rather just try to work through things.
posted
Makes a lot of sense Sheri. When one thing is weighing on you so much, as we know your job is, it just puts that much additional stress on you. I hope you are well enough for work on Monday.

I agree stress is the worst thing for your body, mind & spirit. Glad to hear you are feeling well enough to return to work, even if your work place is stressful, hopefully the agency will find you a new job that is perfect for you.

I forgot to mention, if you don't want to take an anti deppressant, try taking a B complex vitiman for awhile, it is helpful if you are depressed, when you get home if possible take long bubble type baths to relax & drink soothing herbal tea before bed.

I just can't imagine returning to work on Monday. Today I tried to clean up the house a little and went to the grocery store and it wore me out. I don't have any breath - guess the pneumonia is making me exhausted. I can't take off any more time. We'll see.
posted
I know about the not having any breath, I have been battling bronchitis for awhile now, and having pneumonia takes alot out of you, so it will take awhile for your body to just recover from that. Just try to go slow and rest as much as possible. And try not to worry about work.

I don't know how I'm going to do it. I cleaned house a little yesterday and was completely exhausted. At work we have 1 doctor, sometimes 2, but we have 78 appointment slots. We don't get to sit down or have our whole lunch. It's terrible when I'm well. I can't imagine how it's going to be sick.

I went back to the doctor this morning. She had told me last week to come back in 3 days if I wasn't improving but I kept thinking I'd get better. I saw another doctor today. They did another chest xray (negative), took blood to check for mono (negative), swabbed my throat for strep (negative). He said it's just going to take time to get over the pneumonia and not to go back to work until I finish the antibiotic which is Thursday. So as much as I was embarrassed to do it I called my supervisor and told her this story. I've been out of work since October 26th. I may get fired over this mess but I can't walk to the mailbox and back without taking a break.
posted
Well Sheri, if you get fired it would give you a chance to file for unemployment and then find a job where you can be happier. I am sure that is not the road you would take, but things happen for a reason and this may be one of the good things to come from all of the pain and suffering you have been though these last couple of months.

I really don't think they'll fire me but they will make it difficult when I get back. I'll won't be allowed any time off for a long time. Our administration is very controlling. While I was out with surgery I had planned to look for another job, but I've been too sick to do that. Maybe I'll feel like it tomorrow and make some calls.
posted
Sheri, you are just going to have to take the time off that you need. ...for your health and your sanity! Take the time off, get felling better and look for a job when you do feel better. If they fire you, it will be for reasons beyond your control...but more than likely you will be able to find a better job during that time and it wont matter one way or the other. Nurses are in great demand...you should have some options. Most places around here are even paying incentive bonuses to sign on with them. There IS something better for you out there...I just know it!
Gonna say an extra prayer for you!

That's the big question Triss. I've never know what I want to do, from the beginning. That's how I ended up a nurse. I thought I would like it. But it's easy to burn out quickly when there's never enough help, you can't leave even to go to the bathroom, and don't get to eat lunch. All the nursing magazines say that's why nurses are fat. They eat on the go, as fast as they can, and it's usually snack foods. I've taken several of those tests that show you what you should be doing and they come out inconclusive. I always have the same amount of answers in several different areas.

Well then there is a lot out there that you can think about and work on, that is exciting. What are your interests?

I want to get totally out of the medical field. I've applied at the library several times but it's a county job too. They always call me and ask if I realize that I can't work 2 county jobs at the same time. I say yes but I want to apply for the library job and they never call back. I've asked a friend who has a job placement business but I've just been to sick to call her about it. Maybe tomorrow.

Sheri, I can understand what you are going through...I went to nursing school to support my family...and I did enjoy it for several years..but yes, you do burn out quickly....I gave it a good 11 years. And, I know I could never go back to that profession. I REALLY enjoyed me bakery...but when you are the owner...the stress of paying bills, keeping stock, drumming in business ..etc...can be overwhelming. After I sold the bakery, I worked at a law firm for a little over a year...and that was fun...but long hours... I think (honestly)if I can ever work outside the home again...I will be a waitress...no really...I think that is what I would like to do. You don't own the business...you are only stressed at "rush hour"...and TIPS and FOOD!!!! Although I would be picky about where I worked...hey, the world always needs a good ol' waitress that is friendly....I wait on everybody around here..sounds like fun!!! So...just think about what you would like to do to have fun and go with it!

Weezie ~ the $12 to $13 range is for an AIDE.
An RN doing home visits gets so much MORE than that as well they should because they are providing skilled nursing care. Plus, they are not JUST expected to care for the patient but to teach as well...and problem solve. I have never known a good nurse who wasn't a genius at strategy as well.

4Ruddy, that's so interesting that you would be a waitress because at the last hospital I worked at one of the patients asked me one time "are you going to wait on me tonight?"
What has happened at hospitals is that they've done away with the nursing assistants (that last hospital had 1 assistant per unit. The unit I worked on was post op that had 42 beds), so the nurses are expected to give baths, give out food trays and feed patients when necessary, give meds, do treatments, draw blood (because they've done away with lab staff), assist doctors, do release education, dress wounds, do blood pressures. It's terrible and it's that way at every hospital I know. The reason I left that job was I went to work one day (I worked 2nd shift), and there was 1 other nurse, 1 aide, me and no secretary. We had 36 patients. The other nurse and I never went back to work there. It's not a safe environment.
At the job I'm at now, we don't get paid over time and we've been told that we're "expected to work until the job is done." Which means when we have 78 appointment slots and one doctor, that there's going to be overtime every day. What we are supposed to take is compensatory time, which means for every minute you work through lunch or after 5 you are to submit your "comp" sheet to your charge nurse, who submits it to the supervisor, who ok's it. Then you have to take the time off the same week that you earn the comp time. Problem is that you can't take the time off because you can't leave you clinic unless you find someone to cover for you. Which sounds easy but everyone has a job. No one can do your job because they're busy doing their own. It's ridiculous.
Moral of this story is that if you have to go to the hospital take a friend with you so you get fed. One nurse can't feed 8 patients and do everything else too.

Sheri..that is EXACTLY why I would not go back in to the nursing feild! I cannot tell you how many double shifts I had to work because there was no relief nurse to come in...and you're right...you CAN'T leave...if you do you can be charged with patient abandonment! At first the doing away with the Nurses aides was because somebody had a stupid idea of the nurses doing total patient care..so they would "know" their patients. Well, that might work if you had 3 patients...but when you have 14 to 20 patients...it is impossible! Now, medicare/medicaide funding has a lot to do with it. This is one of my bigger soap box issues....how is it that we can pay a man millions of $$$$ to play FOOTBALL...but we cannot pay a nures squat to take care of a human life??? I certainly don't get it! And now they are bringing in nurse from other countries because of the "shortage" so when you are in the hospital..you may have a nurse that does not even speak ENGLISH...that can't be good! It's crazy...just crazy I tell you! I certainly more than understand you not wanting to go back to work where you are...and I am praying that something comes up for you...

Well let me tell you girls some horror stories of waitressing... I have 16+ years of working in the restaurant business.... and doing everything in it but owning it, and working 10, 12, 15 hour shifts, 6 and 7 days aweek, NOT EVEN MINIMUM WAGE, AND NO PAID BENEFITS, AND NO OVER TIME AND you eat your food~~~STANDING UP, COLD AND ON THE RUN.. THAT IS IF YOU CAN HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT IF FRONT OF PEOPLE.. you work every HOLIDAY, WEEKEND, AND NIGHT... you have no family life, cause where you work is your second family and those are mostly drunks and a few other things I won't mention, cause they all have problems and turn into a different person when you're waiting on them... from hungry and angry to full and angry.. or just full of themselves... I think I'm gonna quit right there as Cindy says.. cause you don't wanna get me started.. Whewwwwwwwwwwww.... that's alot of memories I just relived.. *I might have to find something to drink*
