Papito & I have been chatting back & forth on PMs recently, & after I mentioned to him that Hubby & I were going to drive down to watch the Raider/Bronco game this past weekend & that I was determined to tour the Jelly Belly jelly bean factory while we were there this year, he suggested that we meet there for coffee, & offered to bring me "A White Ginger Lilly"! [clappy]

Late last week, however, he wrote that he was down with a nasty bug that he didn't want to pass on to anybody, so he suggested that he have someone drop the White Ginger Lilly off for me at the Motel office. (I'm disappointed that we couldn't meet each other in person, but the 500+ mile drive to watch the Raiders is an annual trek for Hubby & I, so hopefully we'll get to meet Papito next year!)

Anyway, while we were getting ready to head for the Jelly Belly factory early Monday morning, the Front Desk called to say that there was "a plant" there for me, & to be sure to stop & get it on our way out.

What a surprise! (I actually didn't know what to expect... a bulb, a plant, or what...) But, what I found waiting for me was not "A plant"... [shocked] it was nearly a whole FOREST of Ginger Lilly, with a nice bunch of Lemon grass, to keep it company!
 -
It stands about 4 feet high & there must be at least 20 of them in there!!! Hubby just rolled his eyes, as he struggled to get it into the back seat of our little car... NOTHING surprises him anymore, since I turned into a flower nut! [nutz] I couldn't recline my seat to take a nap on the way home, but thought the "sacrifice" was worth it! THANX, PAPITO!! What a sweetheart you are! [kissies]
I'm SOOO happy! -

Now, what to do with them... I looked up these plants, & from what I've had time to read so far, both the Ginger Lilly & the Lemon grass are Tropicals (they like moist & warm) so I don't think I should put them outside here. While it's both moist and warm here, those 2 things don't happen at the same time of year (& our "warm" gets pretty extreme... as in HOT)! The Red Ginger plant, that my daughter sent me from Maui, doesn't seem to like full sun, but is happy in a sun-bright room & likes to be misted. (Are these going to want the same care?)

What I also need to know is what the max high & low temps are, that they can withstand. I know that you probably have yours outdoors, Papito, but I don't think your temps fall down into the high 30's, in the Bay area. I could put them outdoors later in the spring, but I'd think I might want to bring them back inside when our temps start pushing up into the 90's or so. (? [dunno] ?)

Keeping them inside is no problem for me... I have space for them where they'll get plenty of bright sunlight & not be left out to bake away, but it would be so terrif if I could plant them outside next to the house. I love Ginger cuz it's such a stately looking plant, & these are going to be absolutely beautiful when they bloom!

So anyway, thanx again & again, Papito! Some people wait till they "get old" to take up golf... Without knowing it, I saved flower gardening for my "golden years", & am simply loving this "new" world that I took so long to notice! (I don't feel old though... I'm more like a little kid who just learned to ride a 2-wheeler! Raising flowers must keep people young! I know it sure seems to work for me!) [thumb]
