But I cannot for the life of me remember what I planted here. Although it looks similar, the leaves are too rounded to be catnip, which I also have growing.

Another good guess but I did not sow chrysanthemum seeds and there are no mums even on the property.

I thought catnip or lemon balm, too, especially because I grow both but the leaves are a bit different. Hang on and I'll take photos to compare.

Catnip...
Lemon Balm...
Mystery plant...
As you can see, the catnip leaves are narrower and pointer and the lemon balm is close but not quite. The mystery plant has leaves considerably larger than both, but they are both certainly similar. The only mints I am growing are apple mint and spearmint, neither of which look like the plant I am trying to identify. However, it does have a familiar scent, not lemony, which I cannot place. I am driving myself crazy because when I finally discover what it is, it will be one of those "Of course, I knew that!" moments.

It could be catmint. Definitely similar to catnip. This is the first time I've seen it and I don't have catmint seeds so I'm really not sure where it came from, except I vaguely remember planting something....
Lynne, what is the difference between catmint and catnip? Do they have similar effects on cats?
Donna, I'm quite sure at the rate it is growing it will soon outgrow the pot, as does my catnip.

Weezie, it smells faintly like catnip but not exactly and not as strong.

Cricket - here's a link to a good picture of catNIP and some info. If you click on the picture there you will get a larger one. It also describes the shapes of the leaves and stems.
and here's a link to a good picture of catMINT. It looks like catmint leaves are more heartshaped and a little rounder, while catNIP is more elongated. catMINT
It would be funny if your plant wasn't either of these after all... I'm just learing about the mint family - have catmint, chocolate mint, pineapple mint, and apple mint so far. Potted them all up except for the (older) catmint, so they wouldn't take over my universe!

Cricket - here's a picture of my catmint this morning. It has really taken off, especially since I cut it back twice already this season. I can't believe how large the leaves are this year. By the way, it grows under our second story deck in almost all shade, and flowers terrifically.
Our first cat, Cookie, loved to roll around in sprigs that I would bring indoors for her. Our current 3 kitties have no interest in it whatsoever.
