I know this plant! But I can't come up with the name yet. Darn. It will come to me; I just need a bit of time. Plants: 70 | From: Lehman Twp PA | Registered: May 2004

I have a couple questions before I'm certain. 1. This doesn't turn into a vine, does it? 2. Are there actual flowers on it prior to this, or is this all there is?
I am leaning toward one plant, but it might not be the one I first thought of.

Sorry it took me so long to post today! My current thought is that its a wild hydrangea. I forget the new policy about posting links. I have one if you need it. Originally, I was leaning toward the large white trillium; this variety has some that don't only bloom on the top. However, the "flowers" on this seem to resemble receptacles left when petals have fallen off a flower. If they are, indeed, flowers, then I'm stumped because the leaves were very different on the only one I found with similar flowers.

It looks like the flowers have fallen off, and a seed pod is left, but not sure???
I first looked at the leaves and kinda thought they looked like a sunflower (the four on the top) But not on the way down they don't. too long and skinny.......

the closest I could get is the clematis terniflora/or sweetautumn clematis. Those things grow all over the mountains in Washington State so I bet wild willy knows what they are called. The flower described is what I remember seeing on the plant when I was wondering around in the woods as a kid. But the description of the leaves seems wrong to me. What I remember best is those suckers get really big leaves on them. But the ones I saw were never twinned around a tree they were just in the forest close to trees. I'm so sorry I couldn't find it.

your right it is a vine but it can grow 30' high and get 4 inches in diameter. But my problem is that the leaves although they grow oposite one another are suppose to grow in groups of 3 or 5 according to what I read and that's the wrong grouping for what weezie showed us. Also the ones I was were growning wild in the Pacific Northwest not the northeast. I guess my key let me down.
Good luck finding the plant and let me know what it turns out to be. This is much better than playing clue.

This one kept reminding me of nettles, but it didn't stand up under close scrutiny, so I finally got out my Peterson Field Guide and went page by page till I think I found it. What do you think about feverwort? The sepals where the flowers were look the same, though there aren't fruits yet in your photo Weezie.
