Hi all,

I received this plant from a friend, who doesn't know what it is. I know it requires a lot of water, and can even sit right in water and still do well. I am having some trouble with mold forming in the soil. A relative suggested maybe using vinegar, but said it depends on the type of plant. So, I need help identifying this, and if any of you know offhand whether or not it's okay to use vinegar in the soil for this plant, I would appreciate the information, as well as how to go about doing that. Here's the pic (hope this works!):

Thanks!

Kinda looks like aloe to me. And I wouldn't put vinegar on a plant.. I've heard folks say they use vinegar to *kill* unwanted weeds, etc.. and I'd be afraid of what that would do. Of course, someone more knowlegeable may say differently.

Looks kind of bumpy. Are the leaves smooth or rough?

It's a Haworthia... a south African succulent. It needs lots of bright light and fairly dry conditions.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your help. Meg, I also thought it might be some sort of aloe plant, and it turns out it is related (I think) to that species. Tamara, to answer your question, the leaves are bumpy. And Bill, I checked out the site address you gave me, and you're right. My plant most definitely is a Haworthia, though it makes no sense to me why it has always seemed to thrive on lots of water, as have my friend's plants of this species. Hmmm...okay. Well, thanks so much to all who replied. I appreciate all of your help. God bless.

Sincerely,
Brooke

hey brooke, i like your quote, and for the mold problem, just let it dry more between waterings... but i'd scoop off the moldy soil first anyway. and don't use the vinegar... i use it to kill weeds in my walk way all summer long...
