definitely a bulb, and i would put it in a pot. it looks cool in the vase with water, but it will live longer in a pot with dirt.

It looks to me like a narcissus, but its hard to tell from the picture. Are the leaves flat like a blade of grass, or more rounded on the edges? If they are more like blades, it might be a freesia. I haven't heard of forcing them in water before but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I would guess that it will bloom pretty soon, then you will know for sure. What ever it is, if you put it in soil,it will live much longer.
