It's terrible to know a little about a lot of things but nothing much in depth.
That looks like a darker version of the "showy evening primrose" which we always called buttercups because when you go to smell it, you get pollen on your nose which looks like butter [to some]. My father stopped along a roadside for us to try it--almost whimsical for him, but he loved plants. American meadows has pictures.
Oenothera speciosa is a darker variety that Burpee has, but it still doesn't look right. Next time you see one, try to get a macro of it.
