Okay, this is growing behind our trash cans....it a vine and is climbing over the chain link fence fast.....the flowers produce the berries....I have no idea what it is at all....we didn't pull it out because we wanted to see what it was....probably a big overgrown weed, any ideas?

I don't know what it is, but I do like it - weed or not, if I saw it growing on our lot, I'd let it be, or at least leave a portion of it to observe.
Great photographs! Sorry I couldn't help with that.

Gosh, it's pretty, isn't it? Love your pics in your this & that album. Hmmm.. being the least educated on these things, if I hadn't been told, I'd have thought those were grapes growing there..lol. I love grapes.. oh, I'd have been in big trouble if those were growing at my house!

Well thank you newt for the identification.....it's funny because it wasn't there last year, and I sure as heck didn't plant it.....but it is pretty in a way. I'll leave it for now since I don't have children that may eat the berries......I suppose the berries are poisonous to birds too? My hubby likes it more than me actually, and it does help cover up the trash cans in front of it.....
Glad you liked the pics, I just got a new digital camera and I have a feeling I'll be carrying it with me everywhere to try to capture some good shots.
Oh, and weezie.....you were right!! How did you know what it was without seeing it

Loz, I think the birds do eat the berries. Guess they can tolerate some things that we can't. After all, they eat the berries of poison ivy!

Thanks Newt....I feed a lot of birds around here and would hate for them to eat the berries and flop over.... They should be okay though then.....

Hi Loz, Now you've got me researching!! I do know that birds eat many berries that are considered poisonious to humans. I just don't have time right now to do more research as I'm leaving on a trip in a couple of hours and I'm still not packed!! Just like me to play when I should be working!! Anyway, I did find this link about NOT feeding the deadly nightshade to pet birds. Hmmm. If you would like, I'll do more research when I get back next week. I'm curious as well. I once had it growing in my garden and a landscape designer came for a visit and said I should get rid of it because it was a weed. Well, we all know the definition of a weed. I tried to transplant it to a spot that I wanted it to grow and it didn't make it! Go figure.
If you find any further info, do let us know. I started my search at google with: deadly nightshade + bird but haven't had time to play around with the latin name or any other terms. If I don't get packing I'll be naked tomorrow or in the same clothes for a week!
Take care, Newt

***Newt, Get packin' Newt, we can't have you naked getting on the plane.. Of course, that would speed up things for you going thru the metal detector, now wouldn't it???
I have often wondered about the berries as well on that plant. I love the purple flowers, but I have to get rid of it because of the wee~one!!!

Hi Weezie, Well, I'm actually driving to my daughter, but the truckers would surely get a site to see! It's only an hour and a half away, but she called to say that there was some kind of accident on I-95 somewhere near the Maryland/Delaware border and not to start out until after rush hour. Soooo, I'm potting up some plants that have been rooting so hubby won't have to worry about tending to them as much. I don't want to fret about them either! He just ran to the store to get me some! Bless his heart! I'll be leaving after dinner now. Just checking my e-mails while I have the chance.
Have a wonderful week! Newt

Thanks Weezie. I'm doggie sitting 3 German Shepherds while they go on vacation. I also get to weed the garden, by request. My daughter injured her knee and will have surgery on it when she gets back. What timing! Just in time for Mom to come weed the gardens. At least I'll feel right at home!
Thanks so much! Newt

Here in Washington, that plant is illegal and must be destroyed. I found one growing in the back of my yard and called the Extension Service and that was what they told me. It is HIGHLY poisonous to all human and animal life and is considered a noxious weed. I'd check with your Extension Service before keeping it. They give out tickets here for having it.
