It looks a lot like some of the weeds we find in the greenhouse taking over all the other plants. Does it have a stem that's covered in what looks like hairs, but when you touch em, they stick into you and hurt all day? If so, then its a weed.
If it is a weed, then some people like it. They like the flowers. I personally hate them with a passion because they only grow around other plants, and choke them. I have no clue how they propegate either >.< i've never seen their seeds floating around anywhere, and they only show up around other plants. Plus they never show up as baby plants. One day they're not there, the next day, they've taken over a whole plant and are 2 feet tall lol.

Hey Bestofour, I'm pretty sure it's Goldenrod... The way it's straight up, no flower's yet, but heading upwards.. tight formation at the top..
And it all depends on your style of gardening..
Some will rip it out faster than anything.....
I personally have alot of wide open spaces, and when it's in bloom, *August/Sept* time, when not much else is blooming, I welcome the vibrant yellow..And some of the heads of the flower are all shaped differently... There is one I know specifically they sell in catalogs, is one called Solidago Goldenrod
The pictures I sent are from the wild but I know they sell it...I've seen it listed.
So, it can take over, it sends runner's like under the dirt... But if you have great soil, loose, and moist, or stuff pulls out easily, it's not hard to control it. *IF your dirt is hard and compact, you'll have a heck of a time getting it out!!!*
And as sooooon as the color goes away, I do go and dead head them, I like it but I'm not a complete work maniac *quite the opposite actually* If I were to let it go to seed, I'd have it everywhere! I do know or can reconize the babies too, and I am able to pluck them from where I don't want them too!! It fills a void in my yard, it's so tall and gives my yard a bit of privacy from one little section, and it's got great color, NO MAINTAINANCE, and is a big filler...
Again, it depends on your style of gardening.. I live in the country and the back forty needs something when I can't get back to it!
I have bright purple, light purple and white wild asters too with it.
But you may want to keep it in check.. Do you have a wide open space for it??? I probably would suggest not to keep it in a manacured bed... it will get BIG!

Awwwe, gosh darn it... I sprayed the one big Goldenrod when I was putting on weedkiller for a bunch of other stuff. That looks purty in bloom.
I will be more careful to not get those again with the weedkiller stuff. I have it growing around my ditch I noticed as well. Now, I just gotta let my hubby know, not to go weedwack the outside side of the ditch!!

Meg, It really is a weed... Grows quite hardy here.... Probably didn't get it completely!
But remember, it can be a thug, so keep a eye on it...
Like I said, for my style of gardening, it works, it may not for others... (*Don't want to steer you in the wrong direction in savin' weeds you might not want!!)

I would love to see mine in bloom.. the pic is pretty. The one that I sprayed with the ragweed right next to it, I yanked today with some of the other dead weeds that I sprayed. I noticed, the top of it was starting to get little curls of buds on it. Boy, do I have a LOT of ragweed around my yard. I was pulling some of it up, but didn't finish. It's so humid out, that I was damp as soon as I opened the door, before I even did anything. Five minutes later, I was *drenched*.

l have a Solidago "golden Thumb" which is very compact, l keep it because it is worth its weight in gold for flower arranging. The lovely arching habit is just beautiful in a flower arrangement. l have had it for 4yrs now, and it has'nt spread anywhere yet.
Maybe it will spread in time, but for now, l love it.

Eugene, Did you know that for the most part the Goldenrod is NOT the one that makes you sneeze. *unless you are specifically allergic to it* The big culprit that makes people sneeze at the same time is the RAGWEED!
Do you have any around you???

I wouldn't mind having some solidago in our lot - how do you seed it - anybody know? Maybe you just shake it - ha ha!
I knew that about ragweed - that is what makes you sneeze. I've brought goldenrod into the house and put it in vases in the fall - it doesn't make anybody sneeze.

I'm not sure about goldenrod here. I love goldenrod and encourage it to grow in my yard. The leaves in the picture appear to be bunched too thickly and the tops of the plants don't seem to be shaped right. I think it might possibly be marestail (horseweed) instead. If it's goldenrod, when you pull it up the underground stem will be curved and the roots will be along runners. If you pull it out and the roots are in a nice circle, it's something else. TONY

Well, I'll never know what it really was. A friend at work asked me if I would hire a friend of hers to do some yard work because his hours at work have been cut and he has a wife and 4 children. He was supposed to come yesterday at 10:00, but didn't. Today he came with his wife and 4 children while we were at my father in laws funeral. When we came back this yard was as clean as a whistle. If it didn't have a bloom on it, it was pulled up. They are Mexican but I thought they understood English and I left them a note. Guess not. The marigolds I planted from seed and were coming up on the hill - gone. The pink poppies a friend sent and I planted from seed - gone. Oh well.
