My daughter has asked for help for her one and only house plant, which isn't doing too well at the moment. The problem is that she has no idea what the plant is, so trying to give it good care makes it that much harder.

The name Kalanchoe does indeed ring a bell with her, and that would mean she's been overwatering it (she's just like me, heavy handed with the watering can ! )
Good grief, you people are GOOD at this ! Thank you so much for the help !

Not an expert here by any means but sure looks like a kalanchoe to me as well. I have one and have taken many starters off of it! BUT mine is alot more compact...have it outside with morning sun/shade. MINE takes more water than I would of thought as well(but remember it is outside and I live in Calif). Yours seems to be spindly. IF it is the same plant I am guessing it is lacking light as well. Here is a site I found with a picture of what mine looks like only mine is alot bigger and fuller. http://www.plantfacts.com/Family/Crassulaceae/Kalanchoe.blossfeldiana.shtml
Jiffymouse should be rollin through and she will hopefully be able to answer as well as others.
Wait for more responses!

Everything indeed points to her plant being a Kalanchoe. She says she dimly remembers the name from the time she purchased it last year - it was one of those impulse buy while she was out buying groceries, you know it's pretty and flowering and oh what the heck, let's add it to the bread and eggs in the cart !
This of course means that she's been overwatering it, has it in the wrong potting mixture and in too little light, so her problems are at least understandable. Mind you last summer she had it out on her balcony where it flowered nicely. I think that this spring she'll have to do a major pruning job on it and see if it helps improve it.
Thanks a lot everyone !

ok crabby (hope you don't mind that, i saw someone else call you that and it kinda stuck - are you a cancer by the way?) about the kalanchoe (yes, it is one) this is what i would do. first of all, she isn't watering it too much or it wouldn't be that big. second, the light is so so or again, it wouldn't be that big. what she does need to do is the following. 1 - QUIT fertilizing it! that is where the spindly growth is coming from. 2 - cut it back. cut all those tops off and put them in a pot of soil JUST LIKE THIS ONE IS IN. put the new pots right next to that one. 3 - put it back on the balcony come spring and enjoy the garden growing!
it isn't short of light, it isn't overwatered, it's soil is fine. it is just too well fed and not pinched back enough. and it is a pretty plant.
oh, and all that is from experience on my kalanchoe! I goofed mine up royally by treating it more like a cactus than what it is. almost killed it, but now, it is blooming nicely in my kitchen window (which doesn't get any more light that what i see in your picture)
good luck and keep us posted.

one more thing, she might want to try turning it a quarter turn once a week or so.

I cut & pasted your message into an e-mail to my daughter, she'll be gratified to know she didn't do too badly with her plant. Thanks a million !
And Crabby is absolutely fine, in fact that describes me to a T especially when my green stuff refuses to grow ! I took the nickname CrabGrass because unfortunately, that's the only thing that seems to be flourishing in my yard ( sigh... ) Oh well, as I told my husband, it's green at least !
