i got 4 huge elephant ears and i was told to ccut them back when winter came so i did but they have turned black-brown on me, was i suppose to cut them back?? [Eek!]

Yes, you were supposed to cut them back. The top portions will turn a mushy mess, but the new plants will grow from the tubers underground next spring.
