I wonder how long it takes for eggs to turn into baby fishies... I bet when I drained my pond and refilled it the eggs were in the plants...and the water stayed in the plants.
I don't need anymore kids!

Cindy, one site I looked at said that the fish will hatch in just a few days. It also said they will be little brown fishlings that will like the dense areas of your pond plantings. So if you were gonna have babies, you will already have them. After a few weeks the brown fish will start to develop their color.

They are brown..we have them here at work..goldfish in our pond..well it really isn't a pond..it's a freakin small lake..but someone put goldfish in them..and they multiplied last year..and again this year..they are tiny brown fishies..and well there are about 5000 of them left out there...they think the catfish will eat them all..so i'm going to go out there with a bucket and catch them and take them home to my new pond..hehe..

My black and orange goldfish are starting to get really big!!!! We love sitting out there watching them feed in the evening.

They are those starter fish. I think someone won some at the fair and decided to put them in there. Well now they are huge. But them mean ole' catfish are in there with them. And now someone has put bass in there. I don't know how long those babies will stay alive. So I'll make sure they do..hehe..Does anyone know if koi will breed in captivity? Cause i heard they don't..now that would be nice, a free supply of those..cause those things are expensive

But really, they are mating. Days get longer signaling time to mate, so they get real active. In the beginning I had a real small pond, and my fish would literally leap out during mating season. I actually found two of them one day laying one on top of the other dead out of the pond. It was like they committed 'fishicide' or something!
What I do with my fish when I have way too many and that happens every year is I take them to my local pond shop and trade them for a due bill toward product. The shop benefits and I benefit. If you have all those fish you are way over stocked for your pond unless you have a lake, lady! So those are my thoughts and experience with the fishes. Hope this helps, and give them some privacy!

you know, cindy, april has an idea. you could trade the fish for other stuff, or sell some on ebay or whatever. i mean, look, loz bought fish off ebay and they made it to her!

That is why i am building a bigger pond..to get more fish..hehe..i just hope they still have them at the pond store when i go get more..ya know? i don't think i would get too attached if they all started breeding and stuff..cause they would overrun my pond..hehe..although i think it will take awhile for that to happen...it is 24' long x 19 feet wide..

I'm so glad I found this forum! We brought our 6 pond goldfish inside a couple of months ago, so they wouldn't freeze. Set up a tank in the dining room for them. Well, they have been acting goofy the past couple of days. Chasing, digging in the lone plant, etc. Anyway, I just saw a fish being squeezed in the plant. She is laying eggs!! I scooped out some of them and put them in a mason jar. We want to increase our pond size in the spring so if they make it this will be great! Save myself $.12 ea on baby goldfish <g>

Welcome.
And I was going to ask the same thing, if they were fertilized yet.
I did the same thing as you, bought a tank and brought my 5 fish inside for the winter. We dug our pond to shallow for our area. It has to be at least 3 feet deep in the very middle for them to survive our winters.
Last week they were exhibiting classic mating behavior. I think because I put some fake plants in the tank last week.

Well, I assume they were fertilized. The males were on each side of her shaking along with her. Do they fertilize right away? I was so busy watching the eggs dropping that I didn't notice the males "dropping" their part of the deal.

I don't know the answer to that, but I fill find out.
When my goldfish did their deed I panicked and removed about 2-3 feet of water from my pond immediately and refilled it, to get rid of the eggs...because I don't want any babies. My 5 original goldfish turned into almost 80 in my small pond, so I had to build a bigger pond for the 80. I can't keep building bigger ponds.

Sharon...how fast did you remove the eggs? ...and do you have them in another tank now?

i don't know if this is a stupid question or not, but,,,,,will a monster koi and fantail goldfish mate or spawn together?? i'm still planning on finding the koi a home in the spring, i don't want anything even remotely close to a koi after i get him out of here.
