When I looked out at the pond this morning I could see my goldfish swimming around the edge of the pond..splashing and swimming in groups. I mean, they were about jumping out of the pond!
They are still doing it, 2 hours later.

Is there something wrong with the pond water causing them to do this? It's gotten quite a bit of algae in it over the winter. [nutz]

OK...here are some pictures.
They are still doing it, splashing around and getting up in the plants, like they are trying to get out of the water [nutz] ...and chasing each other around.
 -

Same thing going on over on the other side of the pond...
 -

Excuse my ignorance, but could they be having sex? [Embarrassed]

If I have just posted pictures of my goldfish doing it, somebody please tell me so I can delete it! [Big Grin]

If that's not what they're doing, I am worried about them!

Well, if they are in fact "reproducing" then I have a serious problem, because I do NOT want anymore goldfish! [Eek!]
5 goldfish turned into 80+ last year because of them doing this.
If I get the same amount of babies per adult this year, I will have WAY over 1,000 goldfish.

Is there something I can do at this point to get rid of the eggs...
...before they hatch? [dunno]
(They do have eggs, don't they?...or are they born alive from the mommy?)

CINDY - ACT FAST!!! [shocked] [shocked] [shocked]

Just found this in a google search for ya...

quote:
In goldfish and Siamese fighting fish, the female can be mortally injured during mating. Goldfish may be pummelled into the sand; Siamese fighting fish may be squeezed too energetically by males hoping to extract extra eggs.

Here's more info, about goldfish in tanks, but I'm sure it would apply outdoors as well...

quote:
GOLDFISH MATING HABITS!!! (SHOCKING!!) Not really. But it makes for a good show. When the water warms up, you will see one fish chasing another (or a whole production of fish doing this) madly through the tank. No, they are not fighting! The male smells the female's ripened eggs (still in her egg sac) and chases her. As she swims, she lays the eggs (hundreds, probably thousands of them). They are compressed, in her body. When they hit the water, they expand, but they are still small. The male will fertilize the eggs as they descend. It can be quite a frenzied sight, so MAKE SURE the tank cover is on securely (as it should ALWAYS be). The fish can also both get SUPER TIRED from mating, so it would be a good idea to separate the males from the females if you don't want this behavior (one tank for each the guy fish will get together and chew the fat "Hey, that lady fish yeah, I usta know her", or something like that, and the lady fish will probably discuss the latest in flowing fins. Just kidding.)

HOW OFTEN DO THEY MATE??? They could do it every week if they are physically capable of it. That means, lots of eggs to clean out, and it does smell (although they will eat some eggs, most of them don't get eaten). Well, maybe you could let them mate once, and then separate them. Goldfish CANNOT be spayed or neutered.

Holy Koogamooga, Lynne!
That's exactly what they're doing!!! [shocked]
There is no way I can separate them! [Eek!]

I didn't have any idea that fish did "it". [lala]
I thought it was some kind of a nature thing that happened...don't ask me what...that got the babies here. To tell you the truth, I have never actually gone out there and stood by the pond and looked at the fish and thought, "Gee...I wonder how fish have sex?" [dunno] (ooops...I mean "reproduce".)

So, this has all come as a shock to me...the whole deal.
And, the fact they they are all related makes me wonder now if they are going to be "normal"...because of inbreeding. (They will probably all end up looking alike!) [Big Grin]

I really don't want the males to keep their strength up and end up hurting the females, but I wanted the females to get some energy to fight off the males. [Big Grin]

They all stopped what they were doing [lala] and started devouring the food. I asked if any of them wanted a cigarette and none of them spoke up.

Yep. Yesterday when they were fliiping around in one of the plants one of them ended up on the rocks at the edge of the pond. Before I could get around to the side of the pond it was at, it flipped back into the water by itself.

They're still at it this morning..... [Roll Eyes]

They are the 22 cent disposable goldfish from Wal-Mart.
They were an inch long when I got them (5 of them). When we put them in the little pond they were so tiny we couldn't even find them until they grew a little bit.

The original 5 had a million babies last spring, of which 80+ survived (that's the "babies" in the pictures)...they are huge, and the 5 I started out with are GIANTS.

I guess I got my dollar's worth, didn't I? [Big Grin] [lala]

Hi Jennifer - welcome to the forums.

By the way... I did google this topic - you'd be surprised what you can find online - if you read back a few posts, I put in some quotes.

Are your comets in a pond, or tank?

I don't live to far from you - as a matter of fact, I bought my car in Wappinger Falls! A camry.

Hope you'll come down and visit with us in the Banter Hall in the coffee house and tell us a bit more about yourself?

Lst year I had 2 goldfish. I didn't know they had babies untill they were about an inch long. Out of the ,what 100's, of eggs only 2 survived. One looks like it's mom and the other it's dad. I ususaly have a big problem with frogs. Maybe they ate the other eggs or hatchlings. I am looking forward to seeing how many survive this year, cause they're at it again. My plans for another pond and will need a few more fish would be great to breed my own. I'm suprised at how many survived in langs pond.

afgreyparrot, i envy u for having success in breeding your goldfish. I am trying to learn on how to actually enhance the chances of my goldfish breeding. I have a small pond measuring about 7 to 8 ft. in length and about 1.5 ft depth. I have a pump which pumps water into my filter which inturns flows back into the pond. My questions would be the survivor probablity of the eggs. I am sure the eggs will gets sucked into the pumps and ended up in the filter system or become fishcake.

I hate to admit this, but after my fish finished their egg routine, I drained 3/4 of my pond and put new water in it, hoping that I drained the eggs out. [Big Grin] I can't handle anymore fish! [Eek!]

I hope you get some babies soon!

Welcome to the forum!

Cyberblues, that was a good point! What is to stop the eggs from going into the filter?

the fishes, if you look at cindy's pics, are in the shallows, in the plants. that is why the eggs aren't sucked in the filters. they are caught in the shallows in the plants. since i have no shallows, i get no babies.
