Author Garden: A Great Blue Heron in my kitchen melcon6 Garden Pro! Member # 85 posted                       Wow! My roommate was driving his brother to work very early this morning. We were having a surprise snowstorm and they came upon a great blue heron in the road. It flew up in the air as they approached and flew right into a tree, then fell to the ground. They stopped and rescued the bird and called around (before 5 am! ) until they found the right rescue people that were willing to meet him that early in the morning and under the treacherous road conditions. It took several hours before the meeting could happen , so he wrapped up the huge bird and put it into a lobster tray and kept it in my kitchen. When I arrived home from work around 7:30 after driving through the storm myself (a normal 40 minute ride took me over an hour and a half) he told me he had a great blue heron in the house and I was like Here it is: Gosh, I wish Thorny was here to see this!!!! Member # 8750 posted                       PS she should have gone south fo winter. * * * * Summer Camp '07, July 14th weekend, won't you join us? summer camp thread 1, 2, 3,4 Plants: 7588 | From: Phoenicia, NY | Registered: Apr 2006  |  Seeded: 66.217.176.116 joclyn guest posted                 oh, the poor thing...freezing her feathers off - yes, she should have been on her way south...the extended warm weather probably has her off her schedule. i'm so glad they were passing by and kindly took her inside where it was warm!!! i hate to see any animal suffering (especially such a beautiful bird!) and i did the same when i saw a cardinal that was obviously suffering from the cold (it was about 10 years ago and we'd been having very cold weather and had just gotten over 36 inches of snow on top of the 12 or so that was already on the ground). i brought her in and let her warm up while i made phone calls...started to give her some water from an eye dropper while i waited for the person i'd finally been referred to to call me back. i've got pics somewhere - they aren't digital though and i don't have a scanner. it was a beautiful male cardinal - we knew she was feeling better when she bit my cousin's finger!! They eat live fish, ya' know. In Tennessee we have MORE Great Blue4s in Winter than we do in Summer. The south east is where the NORTHERN Great blues come in Winter. Better lie down soon. I JUST got in from the hospital with TWO pos bag drains, an abdominal binder on, 5 ponds lighter and about 3 inches thinner, AND A BOTTLE OF 60 PERCOCETS !!! * * * * A bird in the hand......can sometimes be a mess. Yes, the great blue usually does migrate a little south, but a few can also stay here for the winter. It is not totally unheard of. They will feed at salt marshes and tidal pools that don't freeze over. We haven't heard anything about this one , but my roommate said that he has asked the rescue people to give him an update, so hopefully we will hear something. * * * * HAPPY BIRTHDAY CINDY!!!!!!!
