Gosh , Bill, you've got me totally stumped here! I've been googling my butt off and the flower looks like an allium or Joe pye weed, but the foliage and season are of course wrong.
Did you plant it? is it a perenial? Did birds bring it in? Is it fragrant? full sun or partial shade?? Is the flower head as round and ball-like as it appears?

I bought it from a closeout bin as a "premium perennial" but no tag. It's planted in full sun. No fragrance. The flower head is domed on the top, flat on the bottom. The largest head is 5 inches diameter and 42 inches tall. It is not an Echinops. (foliage is soft)
