I bought a dendrobium orchid from Lowe's Hardware last Jennuary. There's been these little seedlings growing in the medium that I've been looking at and going "Huh...wonder what those are?" Well, one's gotten to a decent size and I need to decide whether or not to save them after taking them out of the medium. Here's the link. It's in the Garden folder and is the last picture, called "unknown seedling in orchid medium 8 05." http://community.webshots.com/user/safari_barbie The pic is of one plant. It's pretty cool looking and obviously, has been getting the exactly same care as the orchid. BTW - the orchid is on the right in the pic, the big plant behind the mystery plant is a pineapple plant. Sorry I couldn't post the pic here - when I clicked on the "Image" button, it asked me to enter a URL....????

hi barb ~ looking at your photo, my guess (?) would be that your mystery plant might be something in the peperomia family. i'm led to think that, because of the funny little spikey blooms, are the leaves a little "fleshy"? they look as if they might be. there are soooo many peperomias, from the ultra-fancified to some that are very plain-jane, so nailing it down any better . . .
by the way, i see you're from kure bch, n.c. i live just below wilmington ~ oak island ~ (is that the disney "small world" music i hear in the background??) ~ it's very cool to bump into someone from nearby.

I think it may be pothos or devils ivy or a heart leaved phioldendrum

I asked on the Peperomia Yahoo group if it was a peperomia and yes it is! So Zuzu, you win the prize! It's a Peperomia pellucida, common mane - Shiny Bush. Apparently it's not an easy plant to grow. Lovely..... Zuzu, you are pertty close by. How did ya'll get through Ophelia? We didn't get any damage, but some of my plants (including 2 of my favorites, a rose and maple leaf hibiscus) are very PO'ed from sitting in water for almost 4 days. Barb

hey barb, i'm really glad to know that you didn't suffer too much damage from ophelia we did pretty well here too, 'tho, thanx to a fallen hickory limb, we did have to replace some glass in the roof of the greenhouse (my orchid greenhouse) and the wind pretty well stripped the leaves (and of course the flower buds) from my brugs
i hope your plants are recovering. i'm not a very successful rose grower , but i am crazy for hibiscus of almost any variety, especially the tropicals!!
it's cool that you got a bonus pep. with your orchid, have you moved it into a pot of it's own? it sounds like it might be something of a growing challenge????
