Be careful with sand. Coarse sand is good, fine sand holds water. Acquarium gravel is good to mix in, or you can get a commercially prepared cactus mix. Copiapoa are really slow growers.

Sand is to be mixed with soil, sparingly.. Cactus doesnt like wet feet!
Mine grow great for years.. However i did mix it with cactus soil.. Even grew some from seed..It took about 5 years in zone 5..
