I bought a cactus from Walmart.. It is about 5"long, green and has long thorns (with a white flower on top) and where there is no thorn, there is arms. What is it and how do I make it look better. It is leaning to one side. OH! It has white flowers on each arm too.

Hi! Give it lots of sun, not too much water, and send us a picture! Then we can tell you what you've got and suggest growing tips.

You'll want to sign up for an online picture posting place, such as PhotoBucket. Then copy the link from photobucket, click on the image button under the "instant UBB code", then paste the link.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g300/Rainnie1/x95tmp.jpg Ok. I hope this works. I laid the plant down on my scanner to take the picture. What do I do to take care of this plant? Thank you.

Wow! I love it! Walmart sometimes glues strawflowers onto their cacti so give a check to make sure the flowers belong to the cactus. If they don't, you want to remove them carefully, as they cover and may interfere with the growth tip. I'm still not sure what it is (other than beautiful and healthy) but here are some sites you can look around on:
http://www.cactus-succulents.com/cactus_gallery.html
http://www1.vc-net.ne.jp/~oota/index.html
http://www.cactiguide.com/

The last may be the easiest to start with. In the mean time, keep giving it a lot of sun and not much water in a fast draining soil. [Wink]

I still can't find the name of this plant. Came close, but was still different. I think the arms are babies. I got 3 more growing besides the one you see in the pic. How do I cut them off? How deep should I cut it? or should I cut it even. Or pinch or brake it? HELLLLPPPPPPPP! Thank you. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cactus, I been doing cactus for a couple years. I added sand to my soil with a cactus mix.. they do great for me.. I will have to show you mine..

I just keep them in a sunny window all year round ......When you water, soak it good and let it go till it is really dry.. Is how I do mine.

Why would you want to cut it? The arms are branches.

I thought of making another plant out of it. Propogating the small one. Can it be done? or just leave it alone and let it grow. [Smile]

Myrtillocatus geometrizans: http://www.cactusweb.us/bluecandle2.html

I agree that the cactus looks like that, but those spines and flowers never grew on an M. geometrizans. Please make sure they're really part of the plant. They just look so much like something stuck in/onto it from the pic.

Yes, they can be propigated that way.

The flowers are FAKE. I took them off the minute you told me to look at them. The cactus is growing well. Almost 1/2 inch taller now. And the thorns looks like wooden toothpicks. (and no they are not toothpicks, I checked, lol) But I still love the plant and I am babying it. Thank you.
