I have a Japanese (Dieseccum? looks like pot leaves). It needs to be pruned severally to bring it down to size but I am afraid to prune too much!!! When should I do this?

prune in late autumn. don't prune like crazy. thin the tree by removing non-main branches.

GOOOOO STEELERS !!!!!!!!!!

It is so thin at the bottom- I thought I would just lop off the top. Then I was hoping it would sprout new limbs. This may be too drastic.

no, that is a bad idea.

a crown reduction is when you 'thin out' the tree by cutting alot of branches out so that the canopy is more open & airy. some of what you cut out is to reduce the heighth. this takes a little bit of patience & planning but the result will be very satisfying. for you & your tree.

pruning

There are 2 main limbs from the crown. Should I cut one of them?
