I clipped a few weeping willow branches and am trying to propagate the. I have cut the stems at a 45 degree angle and have stuck them into moist topsoil. The leaves have become 'crispy' and dry, will the stick become trees? I want to have a willow bonsai. Is this unnatural or just a part of the rooting process? They receive filtered sunlight, part shade.

They will more than likely be just fine.
They will start getting tiny new leaves soon.
Just make sure you keep the soil moist until they are established good.

I have started willow cuttings in water, I have used rooting hormone and started them in pots, and I have just cut some right off the mother tree and stuck them in the ground, and never had a problem with any of them.
