I just moved into a new house where the landscapers had plunked some azaleas down in the (very clay-y) soil. I want to pot them instead, but read that they have extensive, shallow roots. Will azaleas be happy in large patio pots?

Yes, you can keep azaleas as potted plants, but you might want to consider one of the smaller varieties.

Since I didn't plant the azaleas originally, I have no idea what kind they are. I guess I'll try the pots until they get a little bigger, and then decide if they need transplanting to a larger area. [dunno]

you can pot them up. the root system isn't as extensive as one might believe, and they are kinda shallow, so a wide pot is better than a narrow deep one.
