Are there any general rules of thumb for which seeds need scarification, pre-soaking or any other treatment prior to sowing? What about which seeds need light to germinate?

hi different seeds need different things.a hard shelled seed needs scarification such as a moon vine seed. and passion flower seeds and presoaking them helps loosen up the hard outer casein so it can germinate quicker.other seeds need different things.just do a search on the seeds that your planting before you plant.that way you have all the information that you need on each type of seeds.hope this helps.your friend in gardening.mike57

yes i would agree...performing a search before you sow is a good idea. just as a note.. i went and i sowed 72 lupin seeds, nice big fat ones, and after i did so, then i read in my notes that they should be soaked for 24 hours before...ooops! i was seriously considering un-sowing them, and starting over, but then i decided..naw..i will see what happens...the worse thing is they would take longer. so i got them very moist, and had my humid-dome on, and had a very nice warm and consistant temp, and dont you know that 4 days later, i have these truly amazing lupin sprouts! and now, 90% of them are up. my conclusion?...nature is forgiving...they know what to do! i did do a stratification for my scullcap herb, and it worked wonderfully! i would like to expiriment with it and see if they would have done it on their own. most of the recommendations are for the fastest germination, but i think that many would do it on their own.
