We planted gayfeather this spring and were very happy with the flower, as it attracted a number of butterflys and hummingbirds. Is there anything that I need to do for the winter? We are in a heavy snow zone, and as it is, the flowers are nearly horizontal to the ground. Do they need to be "cut back" or not. Thanks for helping a rookie!

Is gayfeather the common name for liatris?? If so, I cut mine down to the ground and usually lay the seed-laden stalks where I want more!

You can cut them back or let them die back naturally. They reseed like crazy, so if you don't want more you should cut them back. You could apply a loose layer of mulch for winter protection, but since you are in a heavy snow zone that probably isn't necessary...the snow acts as protection.
