I was told that the plant in this pot died a while back, (I'm not sure what it even is) and then this shoot sprung up and they started watering it,I removed all the dead part of the old plant (it was just left as it was) but is there anything else I can do to help this little guy grow?

It's okay, it's just the one I added one. I did that once I seen that it didn't work.

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!

It looks like it is some type of Chamaedorea palm. All you can do is nurture it very carefully so as to not overwater it. It is a small plant in a large pot, so don't completely saturate the soil. Provide as much window light as possible.

Above all be patient as it begins its long, slow path to recovery. Don't try to force it with fertilizer.
